Neville Goddard Lectures: “What Must We Do?”

10/14/66

Tonight’s subject is concerning your willingness to accept the one who is sent. “What Must We Do?” is the title of tonight’s subject. If you’ll believe me and apply it, I promise you, you cannot fail. For all that I have told you since I started has been by a confession of faith in terms of experience, that’s all that it has been. I have experienced scripture.

So here tonight, what must we do to be doing the work of God? And Jesus said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent” (John 6:29). It starts with believing in him whom he has sent. Given that, all parts…but that is the fundamental and foundational thing; you must start on that foundation. It doesn’t mean that a man like the speaker is saying to you, believe in me, the speaker. No, “Christ in you is the hope of glory” (Col.1:27). He is speaking from within you, and the entire story as told in scripture is the God in you telling you to believe in him.

Well, how did he put it in a way that I can really understand it? “You will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he” (John 8:24). To sin is to miss your mark in life, I don’t care what that mark is. All things are possible to him, all things; no limitation is placed upon this presence within you. All depends upon your willingness to believe in him. Who is he? “You will die in your sins unless you believe that I AM he.” That’s the name of God. But humanity’s tragedy is the tragedy of looking and following, looking for and following after other gods. Even when the whole thing is revealed, we find the most perfect born of woman, who had not experienced scripture, making the statement, “Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?” (Luke 7:19). Still looking for something on the outside, still looking for some being that could save him. There is no Savior but God and God’s name is I AM…all within you…that whole being is God. Either believe in him or don’t. If you believe in him, nothing is impossible, but nothing.

So what must we do? All that you do to do the work of God is to believe in him whom he has sent. “If you will not accept my testimony concerning earthly things, how can you accept my testimony concerning heavenly things?” (John3:12). If I tell you that by assuming that I am wealthy I become wealthy, and you won’t believe that, even though I tell you story after story of those who did, what would you believe if I took you out of this world completely and told you of heavenly things? What would you believe?

I have the Sunday Times from New York every week. It comes usually on a Thursday. In the magazine section of this week, here is a picture of a single cell in the human brain. The scientists claim there are one hundred billion cells in the human brain. They photograph and magnify it 3,400 times, and here is this little cell you could not see with the normal eye. Under the microscopic camera magnified 3,400 times, it’s the perfect tree. I have it at home. A perfect tree in winter, winter in the East, or the North, I should say, where every leaf, every blossom, everything is shed, just a skeleton—one hundred billion of those in the human brain. So when Blake saw it, and I saw it, he said, “The gods of the earth and sea sought through nature to find this tree, but their search was all in vain, there grows one in the human brain.”

I saw this thing so clearly. And I told it in San Francisco and I’ve never repeated it since until tonight…I don’t think I have. Because a lady rose in the audience and she was most critical, and just most disturbed, so why tell it? But I saw this tree coming out of the human skull. I saw it. Then I saw men on earth who thought themselves important. And this one is now gone from this sphere. He was the third in power in the British labor party about two years ago…he’s gone now. He was the one who nationalized all industries and brought England to its knees in an economic collapse. He was going to share everything and take it from everyone who had it and share it because he had nothing to give them, but going to share it. I saw him put from the outside a tree on his head. He tried to jump off and to move with it, and he fell on you know what. Came back again, put it on again, and he jumped again. And again he fell, fell like a piece of lead. Well, I couldn’t resist the impulse to smile and to laugh at this trying to put on from the outside what grows from the inside. Well, he had the presence of mind to die two years ago, leaving others behind him to make the same stupid effort: All the great effort to give everything to the world and not make them make any effort whatsoever. No attempt to awaken their brain, no attempt. I’ll give you all that you’ll take. I’ll give you all your brains, give you this, give you that…have everything given to you. You don’t have to do anything, just stay asleep, remain asleep. Well, that is not life.

I saw it grow so beautifully. One day in San Francisco, I was living at the Palace Hotel. If you’re familiar with the Palace, it’s a lovely old hotel, enormous ceilings when you enter the lobby. As I came through the door, an artist who was waiting for me by appointment, I came a little bit late and she came early, so she sat in the lobby. When I spotted her—it is a very large lobby—as I came down she started drawing furiously and making a sketch. She wouldn’t talk, she wouldn’t look at me, she kept on making the sketch. Then she completed it in a quick rough sketch. She said, “This is what I saw as you came through the door. You are human yes, I grant you, but I saw antlers growing from within. Your whole head…you were like a stag coming through the door. Now, the building itself is eight stories tall, it isn’t tall enough to hold the antlers that I saw coming through and yet I saw it come straight through the door as you walked through the door.”

I tell you, think of it, a hundred billion. If you haven’t the New York Times, you may still get one, you can write for it. It’s in the magazine section. One little cell magnified 3,400 times is the perfect tree, like an oak tree, all gnarled, not a leaf on it, not a bud, nothing, just all the limbs and all the little branches…a single one…and a hundred billion? Can’t you conceive of the garden of God, when it is in bloom? Can’t you conceive of this wonderful garden and you the gardener, you the shepherd, you the Lord? When the whole thing is in bloom and all the energies turn down that ___(??) into generation and turn now up into regeneration, and they water the garden of God, and a hundred billion in bloom? Well, I tell you that’s what is in store for every child born of woman.

But here, on this level, let me now share with you this night…I’ve asked you for your letters, asked you for your experiences that I may tell them from the platform and encourage the faith of all by telling. Well, I told the story a week ago tonight, the gentleman was here and I told his story, how he believed it to the point where he tried it, and how he moved from one salary to doubling his salary. Then he moved from that to having money without working. And then he moved from that to another, into the growing of a tree that all the nurserymen said could not grow in his living room. Well, a gentleman was present who heard it, and it touched a little memory spot in his mind. And, by the way, what I’m telling you now hasn’t a thing to do with this story of the brain that is the article…of what I’m not talking about. They are only concerned with memory—that everyone is a memory point in the brain—therefore the doctors are only concerned with touching this to stimulate a memory.

So, he was present and “As you said it, I remembered” and this is what he remembered. He said, “A few months ago I read in the daily paper a story about a dishonest investment broker. I instantly revised it, changed the entire thing, because I, too, am an investment broker. And I determined that I didn’t want anyone with whom I dealt to ever feel anything other than trust towards me. I wanted absolute trust from everyone who came to my office and sought my services, but I mean absolute trust. Having revised that story, I bathed and wallowed in the feeling of trustworthiness. Then I forgot it, completely forgot it. On September the 28th a man called me and he said to me, ‘I do not know you, but I’m a friend of a client of yours, and I would like to make an investment.’ So he told me what he wanted and I accepted his request and bought a mutual fund, as he requested. This last Friday, when I heard this, that very afternoon before I came here I called my office from Los Angeles and asked if there were any messages for me. They said, Yes, Mr. X wants you to call him. I will not tell you his name, just say Mr. X. So he said I put the call in and this is what he said. Now he’s a client as of Sept. the 28th, this is now October, he said, ‘I have not seen you, I do not know you, I haven’t met you, but friends of mine know you, and I have a feeling that I would trust you’…with emphasis on trust. Now, he said, ‘I have many friends, but I have a feeling I can trust you, and I want you to be a co-trustee of my estate. Will you come to see me on Wednesday to discuss the matter?’” With an emphasis on trust…the very thing in which he had bathed himself. How can he bathe himself?—“I am trustworthy.”

Throughout scripture…you’ll find it beginning in the very beginning of Genesis, the 4th chapter, how we call upon the name. So Seth, who took the place of Abel, brought forth a son whose name was Enos, and men began to call upon the name of God. To call upon the name of God is to call with the name of God, that’s what it really means. Literally, it’s to call with. People say, I will call upon the name of God, and they’ll say, “In the name of Jesus Christ”—who is Jesus Christ?—“in the name of Jehovah, in the name of God” all of these phony names on the outside. When you call upon the name, you call with the name. If I would be wealthy, I must assume that I am wealthy. That’s how I conjure it, and bathe in the feeling of being wealthy. If I would be anything in this world, I call with the name and bathe in the feeling of being it. That’s how I call upon the name of God. So, what must I do to be doing the work of God? Believe in him whom he has sent. Believe in his testimony. Well, what did he tell me? He said, “You’ll die in your sins”—you’ll miss the mark in life—“unless you believe that I am he.”

Now we are told he manifested the name of God. I have manifested thy name to the men thou gavest me out of the world. I have made it known and I will make it known that the love by which thou lovest me may be in them and I in them (John17:6). So he is in me and he manifests the name; he tells me the name is I AM. So I’m not asking you to believe in Neville, I am asking you to believe in the testimony of Jesus Christ. He testifies to the fact that he’s in us and he is sent and the one who sent him is himself: “He who sees me sees him who sent me. I am he.” So, “Unless you believe that I am he ___(??)”, well, then you continually miss the mark, because you think in this, that or the other. And the tragedy of the world is simply following after other gods. “Art thou he that should come or do we look for another?” Looking for another, for another, for another…there is no other. There is only God. God is one.

When I say I am, do I mean any other being in the world? Do I point any place in the world when I say I am? Well, that’s God’s name. So when you say, “I am weak,” it is God who will suffer with you, for you’ve made him weak. When you say, “I am strong,” it is God who will raise his arm and it will be you expressing it. It’s entirely up to you. So that’s what you do. What must we do to be doing the work of God? Just believe in him whom he has sent, that’s all that we do. So if this night you would do it, you would be as this chap, who wants to be trustworthy, who wants to be trusted by every client who comes into his world. To feel…a man who hasn’t seen him is asking him to be a co-trustee of his estate. Can you imagine that? Last year I went back to Barbados and I spent a few months. I made out a will and I got my brother and two nephews that I knew, I trust them implicitly, and they were co-trustees of my will. But here is a man who lost himself in the feeling of being worthy, being trustworthy, and a man that he’s never seen and the man has never seen him, and he felt, “I have many friends, but I feel with you I can trust you.” He hasn’t seen him. Why, he had to come that way. He had to come because he lost himself in the feeling of being trustworthy.

So that’s what you do to do the work of God, nothing else. To give my body to be burned, to give this to charity, to give that, that is not the work of God. The work of God is simply to honor his name. And do you know that anyone who has received this revelation as you have this night, but anyone who receives the revelation, who having received it acts in such a way that he becomes dishonored has actually dishonored the name of God? As you’re told all through scripture, he has defiled the name, he’s rejected the name; he’s done all these things to the name. If anyone who hears it and then turns to any man in this world as the authority, anything as the authority, anything on the outside as the authority, and then acts in a way that he brings about as a result of his actions dishonor, he has profaned the name of God.

You can call God by any name. I can say, “God damn it!”—that isn’t profaning the name of God. I can say “Jesus Christ!” I can say anything…that is not profaning the name of God. But let me hear the revelation and not abide by it and not live in the assumption that I am that which I want to be and that I am hearing from those that I love what I want to hear, I am profaning the name of God. It’s just as simple as that. You can get down on your knees and go to all the churches in the world and you can simply pray from morning to night, there’s no God to hear you, none whatsoever. You can sing all the hallelujahs, all the things in this world, there isn’t a thing there to hear you. “I do not hear them,” sayeth the Lord. He hears those who honor or dishonor his name, and the reward is automatic in this world, automatic. Like the tree I’ve just spoken about bearing fruit. And so it’s entirely up to man, will I honor or will I dishonor the name of God?

So what must I do? It’s so simple what I should do. I don’t care what a man has done, if I know the true character of God, which is love, I can redeem him. I can redeem him by simply applying what I know concerning the revelation of his name. I can assume that I am hearing what I would like to hear concerning that one, and I don’t care what he had done, he can be redeemed. He can be completely forgiven as though he had not done it. That is the story that I am trying to bring to everyone in this world. So I ask you to believe in the name of God. And all you have to do is to do it. After the revelation is given to you, then please do it. Do it in its fullness. Just simply dwell upon the name of God, and God has revealed himself to us as I AM. “When you go unto the people of Israel, say unto them, ‘I AM has sent you.’ No matter what they ask, ‘I AM has sent you. That is my name forever…and by this name I shall be known throughout all generations’” (Exod.3:14).

So here comes the great revealer of the nature and the character of God, called Jesus Christ. That’s the true revelation of God. You want to see God? Look at Jesus Christ. There is God in its fullness. Everything that is God is in Jesus Christ, and he said, “I am he.” But he speaks from within you, bear that in mind, all from within you: “Christ in you is the hope of glory. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless, of course, you fail to meet the test!” (Col.1:26; 2 Cor.13:5). If you haven’t put him to the test, then you don’t know that he is. He put him to the test…as the gentleman whose story that I told fired his Imagination to remember. He said, “It was a trivial thing, because I did it, I revised it; I did what I did, and I dropped it. And then when you spoke on Friday night, it was right after I received my message that I called from Los Angeles and they said, Call Mr. X. So I called Mr. X. and this is what he tells me, and he stressed the word trust—‘I can trust you. I haven’t seen you, I do not know you, but I know friends who know you. And with all my friends it is you that I feel I can trust. Come see me on Wednesday and let us go over the matter of being a co-trustee of my estate.’” Can you imagine that? May I tell you, nothing is impossible to God…and God is your own wonderful I-am-ness. He sets no limit on what he can do, but none. You say, I am this, I am that, I am the other, if you really believe it and walk in the assumption that it’s true, even though at the moment reason denies it and your senses deny it, if you dare to assume it and you persist in that assumption, it will come to pass. You don’t need any help from the outside.

All that I am telling you is a confession of faith in terms of my own personal experience. Believe it…everything I’m telling you. I have experienced scripture, from beginning to end, really. All the little pieces…like the arm, the night that I told you…it’s a lovely thing. I went back and looked it up, and it’s the 22nd chapter of Isaiah. It’s a beautiful thing, how he nailed it upon the shoulder, and gave him the key of David as he nailed the peg upon his shoulder. “You shall shut and no one shall open; and ye shall open and no one shall shut” (Is. 22:22-25). And he’ll bear the burden for awhile, all the responsibility of being the director, the God of that age; and then in the end the peg will be broken, all will fall from him and the burden will be lifted from his shoulder. You must have the responsibility. You awake as God; you must play the part in its fullness. And the responsibility of simply guiding a certain section of time, a certain age, will be placed upon you. He nails it upon his shoulder and gives him the key of David. He shall shut and none shall open; and he shall open and none shall shut. And then the peg that was nailed into him will be broken off and the burden of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all the utensils of the temple will fall. He will be relieved of the responsibility after he has played it for awhile. So that is part of everyone’s future in this world.

Not everyone was here who heard the vision. It’s a simple, wonderful vision, but those who were here you will understand what I’m talking about concerning the passage that really illustrates it in its fullness. So I have been experiencing, night after night, all the things concerning the awakening of God in man. The awakening of the tree that grows not outside that the gods of the earth and sea are seeking, but grows from the inside in the human brain. And every night is simply another petal, another blossom appears, with another expression of what it represents. If you saw this little thing, one single little cell, a whole tree, and a hundred billion of them? Can you see why Blake said, “All that you behold, though it appears without, it is within, in your Imagination, of which this world of mortality is but a shadow”? The whole vast thing is unfolding from within, that your wonderful human Imagination is the divine body; it is God himself in man, represented as a tree. And now, from our little microscopic thing they actually photograph it and it looks like a tree. You can’t see anything but a tree. When magnified 3,400 times, it’s an oak tree, without a leaf, without a ___(??), without anything, just the branches, the limbs, but multiple, an enormous thing, a single one, and a hundred billion of them?

And they’re only concerned about the memory process concerning the structure of the brain. For man suffers injury to the brain, certain amnesia, he has a partial forgetfulness. I have a friend of mine who is now put away. He made a picture, years ago, with Rita Hayworth and he was shot in this picture in the island of Trinidad. Then a man with whom he’s had a feud for years—it is not publicly known, it is implied—they fought through the years for parts, this, that and the other. Others have told me that it was he who struck him. They found him; he was unconscious, and taken to this place, the place of no return. And that absence between that interval and it’s about ten years taken out of his life. When I called him and they let me speak to him on the telephone, he would say the same old thing, “I was wounded in Trinidad. I was wounded.”

You say we’re writing fiction! He played in a picture in which he was wounded and it was in Trinidad. He was struck on the head right there in Hollywood by a man who disliked him. And now his memory goes back, he was wounded in Trinidad…can’t remember anything between, things that came before and things that came after, an interval of ten years taken out of his life. So he knows me and takes me back beyond that moment, but he can’t remember anything in between. So they’re trying to find the great secret of this connection between the little cells of the brain. Yes, it’s all there…no question about it. So here this fantastic world in which we live and the whole thing lives in us.

So tonight, you want to know what you should do if you would do the work of God? If it makes you happy to go to church, go to church. If it makes you happy to give to charity, give to charity. If it makes you happy to do all the things that you now do, wonderful, but may I tell you that is not doing the work of God. This is the work of God, the 6th chapter of John: “Believe in him whom he has sent” and that alone is doing the work of God. Whom did he send? “I am he.” Something on the outside speaking?—no, he is speaking from within me. God became man that man might become God. So he’s speaking from within me, and that presence within me is asking me to believe in the reality of my own wonderful human Imagination; that when I assume that I am trustworthy, believe in him, and wait for the results, it will come. They must come into my world, tangible proof that what I am doing is true. “And a man that I do not know, I have never seen him, and he has friends, and he calls me, one he has never seen, and tells me that I can trust you, I have a feeling I can trust you. Would you be my co-trustee and come and see me on Wednesday, so we can go into the details of being a trustee of my estate?”

I tell you it never fails. All you have to do is believe in God. Well, the average person will say, I believe in God. The whole vast world will say that I believe in God. All but those few and they will say, I don’t believe in God. But may I tell you, the few that stand out in history, the Hitler’s, the Stalin’s, the Mussolini’s, the Fidel Castro’s and so on, they will be like a pawn; and one day they’ll become the most fantastic promoters of a faith that they tried so long to destroy. When the tree blooms it blooms, and they will make a reversal, just as Paul did. No one was a greater promoter of the faith that he tried to destroy than Paul was. Everyone will. So tonight I ask you to believe in him. Believing in him there isn’t a thing in this world that you desire that you cannot realize. You don’t have to go out and dig up people to make it so. Leave people alone. He didn’t go out and dig people up to prove he was trustworthy…not for one moment. He doesn’t ___(??) he just simply bathed himself…having revised the story.

Well, may I tell you as one who speaks from the Word of God, if I read in the paper or hear that one who claims to be a spokesman for God is dishonest and uses his audience to milk them for his own personal gain, I can’t tell you my distress, I can’t tell you. I wouldn’t mention names, but I’ve seen them across the country. And although they’re still acclaimed by others who follow by the thousands to be the great honored things, I know what they’ve done. I know how they’ve milked people for personal gain, all under the cloak of spirituality. I never disillusion those who still want to go…let them go, but I know what they did, and I can’t tell you how it hurts me. If a dentist hears of a malpractice of a dentist, he is hurt. If a medical man who is a form of doctor, an internist, or a surgeon and he hears of malpractice for personal gain, he is hurt. Well, I can see his hurt when he read of this dishonest investment broker, as I know from my own experience when I heard of those who would take a trusting audience and deceive them for personal gain under the cloak of spirituality. So I say leave them alone; the tree will bloom one day. Revise it, as he did. Revise the story for your own wonderful benefit, revise it, but then leave them alone.

But in your own case this night, would you be…and you name it…well then, believe in his name. What’s his name? His name is I AM. You mean, in spite of the lack of evidence I must believe that I am what I now want to be? Yes, that’s what you believe. Then bathe yourself and wallow in the feeling of being it. That’s all you do. Drop it as he did. And in no time the evidence comes. He said, “A few months ago I read it”—well, a few months to me would be three months…the 28th of September was when the man called him and placed an order, which he executed. Then last Friday—I can’t recall the date, was it the 7th, 8th, something like that of this month, which is still October—he’s asking him to be a trustee. All an invisible state…the man doesn’t know him, he doesn’t know the man, save he’s a client for whom he’s made an investment, bought him a mutual fund.

So I say to you tonight go out believing in God…well, if I know who God is. For the great tragedy of the world is the tragedy of following after other gods: “Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another”…still looking for another at the very end. And so he said of the one who asked that question—for he was in jail and he sent his disciples to ask the question, and the one who said it was John the Baptist—he said of John the Baptist, “No one born of woman is greater than John; yet I tell you the least in the kingdom is greater than he” (Mat.11:11). John did violence to his appetites in the hope of gaining the kingdom. He didn’t eat, he didn’t drink, he wore this, he wore that, all in the hope. You can’t earn the kingdom of God; it’s a gift. You simply apply God’s law and live fully in this world, and in God’s own good time he singles you out and then you are called. When you are called, there is no stopping. You can’t resist him. You’re called, called, embraced into his body of love, and sent to tell the story of the risen God. That’s all that you’re sent to tell. Tell them about what else? Everything will pass away. There isn’t a thing in this world today no matter how modern it is but what it will pass away. All the wisdom of man is foolishness in the eyes of God. And the weakness of God is stronger than man. So everything that man thinks so great with his natural, rational mind will all pass away. So go and preach only about the risen God, one who could become the dead and rise from it. Tell that story. No other story.

Now, as we go into the Silence know what you want…just know what you want. As you go in you call not on the name of God, you call with the name of God, and the name is I AM. So if you would be free this night of all the things that are pressing upon you then assume that you are it now. If it will help you to bring into your mind’s eye a friend who would care were it true, bring that friend into your mind’s eye and have him rejoice with you because it is you. Then actually accept his congratulations and his joy in your good fortune and bask in the feeling that I am…and you name it now, what it is that you are calling out of the depth with the name of God. Now let us go.

* * *

Q: (inaudible)

A: That entire 3rd of John is on the story of rebirth. A man must be born again, that’s the third chapter. “Unless you be born again, you cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John3:3) and “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up” (John3:14). That whole chapter is devoted to rebirth. When a man is reborn, although he is strong and healthy, more so than ever before, all the energies that went down into generation are turned up into regeneration. He loves everyone in the world. He sees the beautiful women of the world, he loves them just as much as he’s ever loved any woman, he admires them, they’re altogether attractive and marvelous, but his energies have turned up right into his skull. The serpent that came down has turned up.

Q: He uses his Imagination creatively for everyone, is that right?

A: His creative power is now all up in Imagination. It’s completely turned up. It’s something that you can’t induce. Some people say they can induce the kundalini fire. Induce what! The thing is an automatic act on the part of the Father in you. When he’s put you through all the furnaces, which is himself, then he splits you in two, which is the curtain of the temple of your own flesh, and you behold the blood of God. You know it is yourself that golden, liquid, pulsing, living light; and you fuse with it. As it you move up like a serpent. Your admiration of beauty is still…even more so than ever before. You can admire all the things you always admired. You haven’t lost interest in life…not lost interest in people getting children, getting married, getting engaged, all that excites you, it interests you, and you love it all.

But as far as you go, you return to a peculiar state without any external operation. You don’t do as an early father did, Origin, who castrated himself in order to teach women. He was an early father of the Christian church in the 2nd Century. He was the most influential of all the early fathers. Augustine, who was considered the most, came 100 years after his death, but he laid the foundation for all Christianity. And he purposely and alone simply altered himself that he may teach women without being confused. But you can’t do it that way. I can castrate a dog…I have one at home, one that was castrated…he still has the impulse. He’s not a mule…the impulse is there but he’s impotent, but impulse is there. So he castrated himself and so he lost the capacity, but the impulse is there. In the other, you admire completely beyond all measure, but the impulse isn’t there. It’s turned up, the seed is in him, right into his skull, and he creates from there.

If I could only share with you my visions recently. He simply said, if you will not believe what I tell you concerning here, how would you ever believe when I tell you concerning heavenly things? For when the arm now is unveiled, which is his power and his might, the things you do when you put your head down on that pillow at night! Something that you cannot put into words and have anyone ever believe you, ever, but that’s what you do. You are creating now entirely differently. There’s nothing impossible when you begin to exercise the power that now springs from within, for his seed remaineth in him. No restraint. All these fellows are restraining themselves. So they become priests and they take their vow of celibacy. What vow? Who is fooling whom? Those who will, by sheer determination, either go into some institution for a little while or they’re lying their heads off, or in some other way, they’re still filled with the impulse.

And in the 5th chapter of the Book of Matthew, “You have been told, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you anyone who looks on a woman lustfully has already committed the act with her” (Mat. 5:27). It’s all imaginal. So to look with longing is to have committed the act, even though you do not have the courage to execute it. You may contemplate the consequences and restrain the impulse, but the impulse was the act. But here in this state there is no impulse; it’s all turned up, completely turned up into the skull, and you’re not the same being. On the outside you seem the same being. You’re everything that…in fact, you’re younger and stronger than you’ve been in years, everything, but you’re not the same being. How to tell that to convince any physiologist in the world? They can’t see it. Who can see it?—only you. So I’m telling you, what I tell you I tell from experience. My confession of faith is simply told in terms of experience.

So that whole 3rd chapter of John, which we quoted a portion of…and he tells this to Nicodemus, who was one of the two. For it was Joseph of Arimathea who got the tomb to put him in. He vanishes from the story after the 3rd chapter of John and reappears in it at the end when the body is about to be buried. Then he comes out of hiding as it were and takes the body and puts it into the tomb (Mat.27:57). So it was Nicodemus to whom he told this story, you a master of Israel and you do not know unless you are born from above, you cannot inherit the kingdom of God? And he tells him how it’s done: “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up” (verses 10-14). When that happens in man, he is born from above in the true sense of the word. He was born before, but he had an interval of time before the true being came out, the living water, that went down in the beginning into generation now, as his very being, turns up. It turns right up into heaven, into Zion, the home, the dwelling place of God.

Q: This is in reference to last week’s lecture. You mentioned when you spoke a certain word a man got up and left the room? What was that word? [Occurred in a vision.]

A: My dear, I do not know. I said it when I spoke…I was explaining the mystery of God, explaining how God became us that we might become God. I was explaining and interpreting scripture, the word of God, explaining all these things. And then as I explained it, it seemed arrogant, it seemed the nth degree of, well, one could interpret that as almost being seditious. For here is an authority who believes himself an authority and I’m talking of a greater authority who became man that man may become that authority. And so, when I made that statement, which would put Caesar and all of his little underlings to naught, this one rose and quickly left the room. I knew instantly as he left that room the play’s unfolding, that he has to report what he had heard. Then comes this handsome, tall, six-foot-four, slender man who embodied authority. He was the authority…if he was not king, he was representative of king. But he came in, thin, and walked to the end, turned at right angle, walked to the end, turned at right angle, walked to the middle, then came down and he looked at me. Then you know the story, how he hammered this peg into my shoulder and then cut off my sleeve and then pulled it, and cast it away, and exposed my right arm. The whole thing was bare from here down. Then he stretched himself out this way and then embraced me and kissed me on the right side of my neck and I kissed him on the right side of his neck. As the scene is dissolving…the discarded piece of cloth…I saw the shade, that lovely pale blue of a wonderful fabric. I could see the fabric, it was the best you could find, and the shade was the palest of pale blue. And that was the drama.

Well, then you read the story, “Who has believed our report?” I’m telling these people the most fantastic story in the world. They’re ordinary men—and I am an ordinary man. They’re all seated and when he came in, because of his position in life, we all stood erect, at attention, like soldiers called to attention. And so, the whole drama began to unfold. “Who has believed our report and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” Then we are told in the 110th Psalm, “The Lord said to my lord, ‘Sit at my right arm ‘til I make thy enemies thy footstool.’” The right arm is the power and the wisdom and the strength of God…and it takes everything that opposed you in the past and forms a footstool for you. For you come into an entirely different power, a different understanding of life, when the arm is revealed. You’re told in the Psalms when he cries out to have his enemies be destroyed, he said, Why keepest thy right power in thy bosom, O Lord? It’s not yet time to be pulled out and to be redeemed.

So all this symbolism…and then all of a sudden it happens. I never dreamed that it would happen in this manner, but suddenly it unfolded. That tree unfolded and all these are blossoms unfolding. They are all in bud now, and then one after the other they all come out on the tree of life. And everyone has it buried within them. Buried what? God is buried in man and he is the tree of life. And that wonderful Garden of Eden…the one that he watered with this water of life that has been turned up, that’s been watering this world and now it’s watering Eden and all the trees can come into bloom.

Until Tuesday. Thank you.
