21 Mar Neville Goddard Lectures: “Scripture Must Be Fulfilled In Me”
10/17/69
According to a rabbinical principle what is not written in scripture is non-existent. The story of Jesus Christ follows this principle. “Scripture must be fulfilled in me” he said. “All that is written about me must be fulfilled. And beginning with Moses and the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scripture the things concerning himself. And they said to each other, ‘Did not our hearts burn…while he opened to us the scriptures?’ And then he said to them, ‘Everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled.’ Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures” (Luke 24:27,32, 44).
The one who wrote these words, the unknown one called Luke—for they’re all anonymous—they were only telling their own experiences. It is the Christ in you of whom he speaks; he is not speaking of any Christ outside of you. That is the false Christ and false teachers talk about him as coming from without. So when they read in the scriptures, “Scoffers will come in the last days scoffing, saying, ‘Where is the promise of his coming?’ For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things have continued as they were from the beginning of creation” (2Pet.3:3). Why certainly they do and they will continue—graft, war, dirty politics, poverty, you name it—it will continue forever and forever in this age. So do not look for any sign in the outer world for his coming, because this age will continue. In the midst of poverty, in the midst of graft, in the midst of war, in the midst of everything that is unlovely he comes. He comes like a thief in the night suddenly, when you least expect him, within you. And then he awakes. He awakes within you.
“In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken unto us by his Son” (Heb.1:1). When the Son comes, he reveals God the Father. Until then man is searching and searching on the outside. He will find all kinds of things as to how things are made, but he can’t find the Maker. As you’re told in the 19th Psalm “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows forth his handiwork” (19:1). There is the handiwork, and our chemists and our great scientists are tearing it apart…going off into the heavens now. We’ve gone to the moon to bring back dead earth…never once anything lived upon it. Bring it back, analyze it to find it’s just dead; it’s been dead since the beginning of time. They’ll find it is all dead no matter where they go. It is here that is his handiwork, but you won’t find him no matter how you analyze his handiwork. You’ll tear it apart and think I’m finding the secret of life. Today someone, three fellow citizens, received the Nobel Prize for their great work in trying to analyze this wonderful land of ours. They’ll find many wonderful things about it, but they won‘t find the Maker. They will find the made, and they will find all kinds of things in this world that are made, but we will not find the Maker. He comes only when you find the Son, and only as you find the Son is the Maker who is God the Father revealed.
So the Bible is all about you: it is your own personal spiritual biography. Every child born of woman is written up in the Bible. No, your name is not written there as John or Neville or Brown; it is Jesus Christ. That’s your name, that’s the true being that you really are. So then you’re told in scripture concerning the things to come, for the Old Testament is nothing more than a prophetic blueprint of the life of Jesus Christ. So then you are told in the 9th chapter of the Book of Isaiah, “To us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called ‘Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace’” (9:6). So you read it and you wonder “What is it all about?” May I tell you, nothing could be truer.
It is not in the order in which the prophet recorded it, or some scribe recorded it… it is not in that order…but these names are true and it comes in a perfect order. A child is born and then the name given is Mighty God. The first name revealed to man was El Shaddai, God Almighty. That is Mighty God. Well, suddenly you—individually now, I’m speaking to you individually—you will feel something you’ve never felt before, a vibration that seems to you the very end and you think it’s death. Far from death, it’s waking you from death, waking you from a long, long sleep. You awake within yourself to find that you had been entombed for unnumbered centuries. You do not know how you got there and why. I’ll tell you, you went there voluntarily. No one took away your life, you laid it down yourself. For you have the power to lay it down and the power to lift it up again (Jn.10:18). You went deliberately into that grave, the human skull, and you laid down in that grave to dream the dream of life.
Here for unnumbered years…some mystics claim 6,000 years. I have no vision to support a time interval, none. I’ll go along with Blake if he says 6,000 years, but I have no vision to support it. I only know you feel as though you’ve been there for unnumbered ages when you wake. And for a moment you wonder ‘how did I get here and why am I here and who placed me here?’ Then you read scripture, “He is not dead, he but sleepeth. I go to awaken him” (Jn.11:11). And one day he shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and hearing it he shall awaken from death. For they hear the voice of the Son of God and those who are dead awaken from sleep, for it really was a sleep. “He sends his Son into our hearts crying, ‘Father’” (Gal.4:4), and we hear it and awaken from this long, long self-imposed sleep.
So the first name is Mighty God. When man awakens within himself it takes this enormous power that is God to stir himself, to awaken himself from this sleep. That is the child that is born, for the child surrounds you. You see it and you know the child is the symbol of the birth of God. It is not the same as the Son is given. When you read it in the 9th chapter of Isaiah you think the child and the son are one and the same. No they are not. The Son comes 139 days later. When the Son comes it is then that you know who the Maker of it is and who is God the Creator. For the Son comes and when he comes you know exactly who you are. Prior to that you did not know; you were like the scientists trying to find the Maker of it all and looking outside yourself and it’s not outside yourself. He comes from within and stands before you and calls you “Father.” As he calls you Father you know this relationship is eternal, and you are the Father and he is your Son. That is the name then given to you, Eternal Father, Father forever.
There are four titles given to you. The first is Mighty God and the second is Everlasting Father. The third…and this is a strange one because it is given first when you read scripture, but it is not first, it comes third. And the third is based upon a peculiar wisdom; it is called Wonderful Counselor (Is.9:6). Well, the Wonderful Counselor in scripture is associated with a serpent. In the beginning it said, “The wisest of all God’s creation was the serpent” (Gen.3:1). It was the serpent who suggested that you eat of the tree of knowledge. And then when you’re told “God said you would die,” it was the serpent who said “No you will not really die, not surely,” he did not lie. We experience death, we tasted of death, but we did not really die. Even though we seem to die and all vanish one after the other, we don’t really die. We depart from this world to be restored to life in a world just like this to continue the journey for unnumbered centuries, but we don’t really die. And the serpent was very wise as told in the same chapter. Then God said to the gods, “The man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil” (Gen.3:22), just as the serpent said he would. If you ate it, you would know good and evil, and you would become as the gods. And so, only as coming down into this world of experience…and now that third title is called Wonderful Counselor…it has much to do with the serpent.
Now we are told in scripture, “No one ascends into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man” and “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up” (Jn.3:13,14). When you read it, it doesn’t make sense until someone experiences it and then tells you about it. What you will one day experience and therefore to expect it…it’s going to come. Then that third title is conferred upon you and his title is called the wisdom of God, this Wonderful Counselor. You can give all the advice in this world…it means nothing…for when this title is conferred you speak from experience, you know. You can say that you will not die, not surely die; for in the day that you eat it you will become as the gods and your eyes will be opened and you’ll know from experience good and evil. And yet you will not die, you will return. You’ll return by an ascent back into that heavenly state from which you descended. Just as the Son of man descended so the Son of man ascends…but he ascends like a serpent.
Now the serpent in scripture is described as the seraphim. Beyond that 6th chapter of the Book of Isaiah nothing is said about him, not a full description (6:1). He simply surrounded the throne of God. It is by definition a fiery serpent, a fiery being with human face, human voice, and human hands. He does give him six wings: two to cover his face, two to cover his feet which is a euphemism for his creative organ—he covers his nakedness with two—and then he flies with two. But beyond that he’s not described, this heavenly being, the wisest of all God’s creation and that is you! You are the gods that came down (Jn.10:34; Ps.82:6). You’re not some little thing here that our scientists are trying to find out coming out of the mud and starting as some little amoeba. No, you’re not that. You came down from heaven and you emptied yourself of all that you were in order to come here and assume the limitations and the weaknesses of the human flesh, this thing called flesh and blood. You aren’t pretending that you are man; you became man with all of man’s weaknesses. Assumed the poverty though you were rich; you assumed the weaknesses though you were strong; you assumed all these things though you were an infinite being so that you may have the experience that only this could give you. The whole vast world declares his glory, but only here on this little earth is his wonderful work revealed. Here on this little earth you and I came. We were brothers before we came. We have forgotten we are brothers and we fight each other here. We will one day awaken and return to our brotherhood, for when we return we are God the Father. It takes all the brothers to form God the Father. So that is the third title that is conferred upon you. The first was Mighty God, the second Everlasting Father, the third Wonderful Counselor, and the fourth Prince of Peace.
That latter one will descend in the form of a dove on you (Luke 22:37). Don’t read it as something 2,000 years ago. It won’t happen physically. No, it will happen and only you will know it…no one else will know it. As you’re told in the earliest gospel, which is Mark (1:10), and if you read it carefully, no one but the one in whom it descended was aware of it. He’s recording the event. But it is not seen by another, no one saw it but you. You had the experience and you alone, and that is the fourth title conferred upon you which is Prince of Peace.
So you bear the four titles and therefore you and you alone experience scripture. You foretold it and you came down to fulfill it. “Scripture must be fulfilled in me…for what’s written about me must have its fulfillment” (Luke22:37). And so, “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Rev.19:10). And the name by which he is called is the Word of God and “the Word of God cannot return unto God empty, but it must accomplish that which he purposes and prosper in the thing for which he sent it” (Is.55:11). You are the Word of God. And the Word was in the beginning, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (Jn.1:1). You were not only with God…you were God. And here comes a fragmented God, fragmented into all of his sons, for it takes all the sons to form the Father.
And so here, you came down into this world to experience the horrors of this world, so don’t think for one moment you’re going to change it. When our politicians promise you they’re going to change it, they’re going to stop poverty, stop wars, stop this…in today’s paper we’re going to stop war. In the last six years we have sold to other nations close to fourteen billion dollars in conventional arms. The Communist world, they’ve sold to the same poverty ridden nations close to $16 billion in conventional arms. They can’t afford to feed themselves and we force upon them to buy what we’re manufacturing. And then we go out with this pious look and ask people to sign a little paper to stop war when we are feeding that nation that can’t feed themselves not food but armaments. $13 billion in six years…a little over $13 billion, and our factories are pouring it out and forcing these nations who can’t afford anything…they need tractors. But you can’t stop this world from being what it is. It was never intended to be anything other than what it is—a world of poverty, a world of war, a world of dirty politics, a world of graft. Read the papers and see what is taking place in high places.
You aren’t going to change it; it will go on and on and on, because the story of Christ is redemption. He redeems himself in this world. He lifts us out of the world in that spiral motion; for this world is a circular principle and it goes over and over and over. Redemption is based upon a spiral principle where one moves up from this world into the world from which he came, and he moves like a serpent, like the seraphim, this burning one.
So when he comes, what must I see? Well, he said, “As the lightening shines from the east unto the west, so will be the coming of the Son of man” (Mat.24:27), and people are looking for some lightening on the outside. No, it’s an actual fact…it splits you in two from top to bottom. It’s a bolt of lightening. As told you in scripture, he stood on the holy mount, the Mount of Olives, and then it was split from east to west. One half moved north and one half moved south, and there was a valley, a great valley (Zech.14:4). You think of some little place in the Near East called the Mount of Olives…you are the Mount of Olives. On this mount, your own wonderful head, that’s the Mount of Olives. Then the whole body is split from top to bottom. Your body is parted about, oh, four to six inches, that entire valley, and at the base of your spine is a pool of golden, liquid, pulsing light. It’s the blood of God…your own blood. And you will see it and you will fuse with it, and then like a spiral fire you will ascend into your skull, and it will reverberate like thunder. This is the thunder that you will hear.
I tell you what you are going to experience. Whether you can grasp it or accept it tonight, I do not know. I know you will not disprove it. You may fall back into the sleep and dream the dream that you are dreaming now…for this is a dream. A man dreaming is the sole author of all that occurs when he dreams. He’s caught up in a reality that he himself is making. Even though what he sees may frighten him and he would have horrors in his dream and really believe for a moment that what he’s seeing is part of a reality outside himself and beyond his control. You’ve done it and I have done it. Haven’t you had a dream where you’re scared to death…not knowing that you’re the cause of all the difficulties? Well, the same thing is happening in the waking dream, but man doesn’t know that this, too, is the dream until he awakes from it.
He will awaken in the manner in which I’ve told you. You will one night be sound asleep and the sleep will seem to be the kind of a sleep you’ve endured through the years when suddenly something arouses you, something that is different, something that is not felt before. And you will think you’re waking as you have awakened day after day over the years, but it is not. You wake to find yourself in your skull, and your skull is a sepulcher and you know it. It’s a grave and you know it; and only the dead are placed in the grave and you know it. But you are not dead, you’re alive. You weren’t dead; you were sound asleep. But someone must have thought you dead to place you there; or when you went into that place voluntarily and fell asleep the sleep was so deep that others thought you dead.
Then in the course of time, in the fullness of time, you heard the cry of the Son of God and that voice woke you. You awoke within the grave and then you came out, born from above this time. Not from below for these bodies were made for you by woman, by your mother, and they’re made from below. But you must be born from above if you would re-enter the kingdom of heaven, for unless you are born from above, you cannot enter the kingdom of God (Jn.3:3). So everyone in this world is in this world because they’re born from below from the womb of woman. But man, while here, must be re-born and born the second time from above…and that “from above” is his skull. He comes out and he has no mother. Eventually, he’s going to find that he has no father, and that he is the Maker of it all. He finds it out only as the Son appears before him and reveals him to himself as the being who did it all.
Here we are in this tiny little planet, so small you couldn’t see it possibly beyond, say, the moon. I dare say if you got far enough away it wouldn’t be seen…this insignificant little thing. Yet it is the most important thing in the whole vast universe. No one little speck in the whole vast universe could cradle this biological experiment that expands the power of God, expands the wisdom of God. For without this, God could not expand, God could not grow in wisdom; and therefore no matter how wise he appears to be it would be stagnant if he could not expand beyond what he is. So, God is an ever-increasing illumination, an ever-increasing creative power, and ever-increasing wisdom. By reason of this one little speck called the earth, where these little garments are being worn by God, he could now fulfill his promise to himself and awaken within himself. And the whole play is told us in the Bible.
So the story of Christ is not what the world is talking about: he isn’t going to change anything in the world. Tomorrow’s generations will think it’s going to be different; they’ll find poverty as you find it now, and they will find all the things that you find now. Oh, changes yes. Changes in fashion…if you live long enough the fashions will go back to what they were. It’s like a wheel, it’s a circular principle, and so not one thing is really going to change. The only change is going to be when man comes out of it spirally and that is when man is redeemed. He goes back to the world from which he came, but this time enhanced by reason of the experience of death in this world called earth.
So this principle of which they speak is a true principle. So let me repeat this principle of the rabbis that what is not written in scripture is non-existent. So, are the presidents and the kings and the dictators names of the world are they written in scripture? No, therefore they are non-existent…all the little characters, all the little parts. They can’t help but play the part that they play. They have to play it, because they are in a state. All of this is infinite states. When you enter a state you animate the state and the state seems real to you and to others who observe the state, but it’s only a state. In this world you can play any part. You can play the part of a rich man or a poor man, the beggar man or the thief, he known or the unknown. You play any part in the world if you know they’re states. But if you don’t know they’re states, you’re unwilling to give up what you are to become what you would like to be. You could become what you would like to be in the twinkle of an eye by simply assuming that you are. The day that you dare to assume that you are what at the moment reason denies that you are, and remain faithful to that assumption, it will begin to externalize itself in the world.
But you may go sound asleep when it becomes a reality like a dream. The minute the dream starts and you are possessed by the thing you have created, you forget that you are the creator, and go sound asleep observing your own creation, and then become all puffed up depending upon what you did create. You can create something noble and become so puffed up in your own concept you forget that you created it. Or you could create poverty and become so embarrassed with your poverty, not knowing that you created it. You can create everything in this world by a mere assumption. So I dare to assume that I am the man that I would like to be. Having assumed it even though others would deny it, I don’t discuss it with them. If I would like to experience that in the outer world I will continue in my assumption, and my assumption if I persist in it will harden into fact. That should teach me it really is a dream.
Well, I know a boy, eighteen years old, no money, one of a large family, but intuitively he knew that if he could look at a certain building and see on that building’s marquee a name which would imply that it was owned by his father and his brothers that in a way that he did not know it would happen. So he did, he tried it. He only took one person into his confidence and that was his mother. He told his mother what he was doing, that every day twice a day on his way to work and his way back from work he would stop opposite the building, which occupied a whole block at the widest area of the main street, and there he would see his father’s name and the words “and sons”…including all of his sons. Then his mother told him not to do it because he could only get hurt…that we had no money and therefore what he was doing could never come to pass.
Well, he did it anyway. He told no one else and his mother told no one else. Then two years later a total stranger on the day of the sale bought that building for the family which had no money, no collateral, but he trusted them implicitly to pay it back over a period of ten years plus the interest on it. Then when it was completely paid off he came back to the family and asked them to take the money back and this time give him not six percent but four. In those days you could get four percent. Six percent was an enormous interest and this goes back to 1922. That building became the foundation of the family’s growth, and they started only with my brother’s Imagination, that’s all that he used. Today, from that small little beginning, I don’t think you could buy them out for millions and millions, because their gross business today exceeds thirty million a year.
That’s from the little early beginnings of a man who had the guts to imagine and believe his Imagination creates reality. He discovered that that was God in man and man’s own wonderful human Imagination was God, and there was no other God. If this is God and God creates all things, and then over the years he has tangible proof to prove the reality of what he did, then who in this world could persuade him that it was all a fluke, just a mere strange coincidence, when he’s lived by that principle and built his fortune by simply using his own Imagination? Of course there are intervals in the interval having created so big and vast an enterprise. He may go sound asleep and believe that those he employs…now he has many employees, a thousand people he employs today…and he might think that they are in his way, or this one…because you may forget how it started. We’re all inclined to forget that we are the makers of all that’s happening in our world, and then blame our own dream. This is our dream…the whole vast world is yourself pushed out. But man doesn’t know it and it’s so easy to place the blame on an aspect of self rather than on the maker of the dream. But once in a while he jacks himself up and gets back to the original thought that started it all, back when he was only a boy in 1922.
So here, I ask you to try it. Try it and don’t give up. It won’t fail you! But the other aspect of it is far greater: to depart from this world. But you can’t do it by taking thought. It happens in the fullness of time when the Father in you who fell asleep begins to stir. He wakes and as he wakes, you and the Father are one…not two, just one. And these names are conferred upon you and each name carries a special power. Mighty God is your first name as you awake from the dream. Everlasting Father, that’s the second title. Then the third Wonderful Counselor. And then comes the fourth, Prince of Peace…and of his reign there shall be no end, not in eternity. You are the being spoken of in scripture that men worship outwardly. You hear the ministers and the priests of the world talking about his coming, waiting for him to come, and trying to interpret signs on the outside, that when things get horrible then he is coming. He doesn’t come at the end of history, he comes within history. It’s not at the end of human history; it is at the end of the individual’s history. It only comes individually. So tonight, in this audience one of you could have his coming. No one knows but the Father in you.
But “Ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things have continued as they were from the beginning of creation” (2Pet.3:4) so don’t look for any change. When they promise you all kinds of changes—they’re going to give you this, that and the other, —all right, don’t argue, smile, as you have done through the centuries—for they aren’t going to change anything. These are infinite states and you and I fall into the states unwittingly or we can deliberately go into a state as my brother did into that state. That was a state. He was a poor boy. The family had no relatives that had any money and no one to whom they could turn. So he deliberately went into the state of wealth. He simply actually went right into it not knowing how it would work. When he told my mother she said, “You’re only going to hurt yourself. Were I you, Vic, I would stop it and I wouldn’t do it any more. You know we could never own that building.” We not only owned that building, we owned the bigger one right opposite and others on the same main street and all through the islands…all started from the dream of a boy who persisted in his assumption.
So, this is simply, persistent assumption will do it. What have you assumed? That you are what the mirror reflects and what the background tells you? Don’t unless you like it. If that is not what you would like to live with in this world, don’t accept it. Now, look into the mirror of your mind and then don’t look away, persist in that assumption. What would you like to be? Then declare that you are it and persist in that assumption. Morning, noon and night you live in that assumption as though it were true, and no power in this world will stop it from becoming true in the world of effects. But you can’t go from side to side in the doing of it. As you’re told in the Book of James, if you look into the mirror and see yourself and turn away and forget what manner of man you look like, well then, it’s simply this inconstant being and not a thing will happen to you but the perpetuation of your former unlovely state (1:22-25). Look into the mirror of your mind and continue in that state as the man that you would like to be. See it, sleep in it, wake in it, live in it, and it will become.
But in the end you’re going to depart from the world which is this world, and you will go up back into the world from which you descended. For, you came down from heaven. You are the gods spoken of in the scriptures, you are the Elohim. When people tell you that you are some insignificant little thing, forget it. They will say, “Neville, you are blaspheming. You are taking the name of God in vain.” Let them say what they will. They are always afraid to claim their birthright, they all do. So they’re turning to a God on the outside who never existed, and they make little images of him and stick them on the wall, and then get down before their own creation and bow before it. Is there any cross in the world that wasn’t made by a man? Is there any image of Jesus Christ? And there’s no description of Jesus Christ in the scripture…not the faintest description of what a person looked like, and yet we have unnumbered pictures of him hanging all over the Christian world and people bowing before that which is made with human hands. Read the 115th Psalm, and if you have one of them, feel ashamed when you read what the Psalmist said in the 115th Psalm concerning making any image and then bowing to it as some power that could help or hinder you. “If anyone should say, ‘Look, here he is!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ believe it not” (Mark 13:21). Why? Because when he appears you shall know him. Why shall I know him? “Because I will be like him” (1Jn.3:2). Can’t be other than myself when he appears: I am he. For, “Unless I believe that I am he, I die in my sins” (Jn.8:24).
So here, the Bible is all about you. And you’re only here in the final picture to fulfill the book that you dictated before you came down. You inspired the prophets who were only ___(??) of revelation. The Son is by his very nature and being the revelation of God. So when the Son comes, God is revealed; and he reveals you as the Father of the Son who stands before you. So the Son is God’s Son, and he reveals you as his Father…therefore, who are you? And this I know from experience. I am not speculating, I am not theorizing. I am telling you what I know from my own personal experience. I did not hear it from a man nor was I taught it. Like Paul it came through a revelation of the true meaning of Jesus Christ. And it’s all in scripture and every one of you will experience it. When we take off these garments, and all rise, you and I will be in a state of ecstasy…the brothers who have returned and all together form the one eternal Father. For, we all have the same Son. So if his son is my Son, are we not one Father? And there aren’t multiple sons, no, one Son. We’re all individualized and we will never in eternity lose our individuality, and yet in spite of our individuality we are one in Spirit by reason of the fact we have the one Son. That Son is our Son, therefore we are brothers, and collectively we are God the Father.
So the principle upon which the whole thing is based is that man, true man, has come here only to fulfill scripture. And, “All that is said about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled” (Luke 24:44). That’s all that I’m here to tell you, how to simply understand the book. But you’ll understand it best and only really understand it when what I have experienced you experience. You will experience it …there is no aristocracy of privilege in this story…we’re all one. One is not better than the other. One awakes; he can only wait for the other to awake. Nothing does he want more than for the awakening of all, because without all awakening the Father is not complete. So tell it over and over and over until everyone hears it and everyone sets their hope fully upon this wonderful story that one day must erupt within them.
Now let us go into the Silence.
* * *
Now are there any questions, please? Lot’s of time…any questions? Well, I hope it was as clear as your silence implies. But if it wasn’t clear, this is the time to make me clarify it. Well, if there aren’t any questions, it must have been clear. Now we’re here every Monday and Friday until into December. You’re all welcome. Come when you feel like it. We try to make it a meeting that is complete in itself, so you don’t have to feel that you must continue the next one and the next one in order to understand it. We hope that we can make it as clear as possible all within the one night. And so come when you feel like it and bring a friend.
Thank you. Good night.
