19 Sep Neville Goddard Lectures: “Genesis 3:16, Childbearing”
2/2/68
Possibly one of the most misunderstood verses in the entire Bible you read in the 3rd chapter, the 16th verse of Genesis: “And the Lord said to the woman, ‘I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; and in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.’” Now here we have this fabulous world of ours where men and women have accepted this literally on this level. Where the male thinks that he rules over the female, and that he is the husband spoken of in this verse, and that the child that comes from the womb is the child spoken of. Hasn’t a thing to do with it!
One must understand these sixty-six books to really understand scripture. In the 54th chapter of Isaiah we are told, “Your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name.” Your Maker, well then, who is the wife?—humanity, male, female. We are God’s emanation yet his wife ’til the sleep of death is past. Now, we are, regardless of sex, we are the wife spoken of in this 16th verse of the 3rd chapter of Genesis. Then who are the children I’ll bring forth? Before I really bring forth the child, I’ll bring forth unnumbered children not from my womb. I’ll bring them forth…I fall in love with an idea…the most horrible idea…and then who sires me?—my Husband. Oh, he will play all the parts, because God is a protean being with power to play every part in the world and assume every shape in the world.
So I can fall in love with the most horrible idea. Just take a vivid example: Hitler and his Third Reich are going to rule for 1,000 years. There were unnumbered people who fell in love with that concept of a superior race, a Germanic race, who would enslave humanity. Now, do you know that millions of women who were happily married—they loved their husbands, loved their children—but the idea caught fire in their minds, and do you know that these women had an affair with Hitler in their dreams? As you have, if you’re honest about it, you’ve had an affair with men in “soft Beulah’s night” and the men were not your husband here. It was not the person, it was the state. The state was personified. You fell in love with the idea here personified by a person, and you met him in “soft Beulah’s night,” and the affair was the most normal thing in the world. You so loved it, you so loved the idea, the state. And when you woke the next morning and looked at your husband, you were ashamed, because you don’t understand the mystery of Christ and you thought you had an affair with the person. He was out playing cards or getting drunk or doing some other stupid thing, totally oblivious of you as a person. But here was a state and he personified that state and you accepted it. Then in “soft Beulah’s night” here you yielded without effort to the idea, to that state. And multiply, to fulfill scripture, go out and multiply and replenish the earth with the same idea. Can’t kill them, because we give ourselves to an idea and then we multiply it and replenish the earth with that idea. So how are you going to rub it out by shooting a man, cutting off his head, or putting a man in prison? Can’t do it when you and I can fall in love with these false gods! So we go through life this way, yielding to this in our “soft Beulah’s night.”
So this is what is meant, “You’ll bring forth in pain…I’ll multiply your pain in childbearing.” From that moment on until the child is born, you go through literal hell, falling in love with false gods and giving birth to these in the world, bringing forth these ideas and scattering these ideas in the world. These are your children. So if anyone is perfectly honest with themselves, they will confess that they have had union with someone other than their mate in this world, not knowing that that one was only a state of consciousness. But on this level, another form of the dream was simply personified, and you thought it was a person. Yet it is known that someone has gone up after such an experience and slapped the individual in his face or her face when they came to, to realize what they had done. They thought it was the person. They don’t realize it was not the person; it was the state the person represented and personified in this world. For, your Maker is your husband and that Maker is the Lord. He plays all the parts.
He could this night if you are in love with what I say, if you really believe what I teach, you’ll fall in love it, and you may find in “soft Beulah’s night,” in spite of an enormous audience of hundreds of thousands, you have no shame, none whatsoever, you will have union with the being who personifies it. You will think you had union with me, the thing called Neville, and at that moment I may be entertaining someone at home, enjoying a lovely drink, totally oblivious of you and whatever you’re doing. I am simply myself at home, or I may be asleep…but certainly not in your dream as a person. I may be sitting at home reading the Bible as I do all through the day. And I have my friends in and we’re entertaining and enjoying an evening, a social evening, discussing this yes, but at the same time moving from this to other branches of man’s interest in this world, and enjoying a few drinks. That could be my evening, and yet you could have this and think, “Well now, I had union with Neville.” What you had was with the state. If you really believe what I say and accept it to live by it, it’s quite possible and highly probable that you will, while I’m totally innocent, may I tell you. I am not the person. I was not part of the pleasure.
But your Father was, for your Father is your own wonderful I-am-ness…that is God. The Bible recognizes only one source of dreams: All dreams proceed from God. God is a protean being; that is, he can play and does play all the parts in his dream. He emanates you, you are his wife. And so you fall in love with something other than the true God, who is the source of everything in your world, and you run after this false god, that false god, the other false god. I recall a friend of mine—she’s gone from this world now—she was born in Boston, a very poor girl. She had no social, financial or intellectual background, but an ambition to shine, just to shine. Her mother brought her to New York City and tried to get her into the chorus. Well, George M. Cohan was casting a show. A young lad came from Denmark, wonderful dancer, and instantly Cohan grabbed him up as the premier dancer in the show. Well, he was given the right to pick the girls for his chorus. He was the dancer; they were the chorus. His eye fell upon this beautiful girl. She could not dance anymore than anyone who didn’t have feet, but he didn’t concern himself with her lack of ability, he picked her. First of all he wanted that girl and so she entered the chorus. That first year in the chorus—show ran two years—he married her and she bore three lovely children.
This lovely girl, married to a marvelous man, with this ambition of glamour, all glamour, all circumstance, pomp and circumstance, well, she had affair after affair after affair in “soft Beulah’s night” with the Pope and the Prince of Wales—they represented glamour to her. The poor old Pope, long beyond the ability to do anything, and the Prince of Wales, if ever—I do not know the man’s sexual life, but I mean, it’s a strange, peculiar life anyway. But she was having these affairs in this state of consciousness, so she perpetuated this belief in pomp and circumstance. Well, don’t blame the Pope, he didn’t know her. Don’t blame the Prince of Wales, he didn’t know her, but he gave up his throne for a girl and that was romance and all this marvelous thing. Then, of course, the Pope comes by on the backs of strong strapping men, and here he is extending his foot or his hand to be kissed…and she loved all of that. Oh, to be part of that world! And so she was always having union with the Pope and the Prince of Wales.
Now, you may be shocked if you are a Catholic, but don’t think he is exempt. Don’t think the Prince of Wales is exempt because he is Prince of Wales. This is part of the great drama in which we are cast. She played her part. Well, she died a strange pathetic death. For the last fifteen years of her life she became a wino, and she gave her body to anyone for a bottle of wine, but anyone, regardless of what they were just for a bottle of wine. So that was her picture…wedded herself to a false god. And so, you’re told, in pain, I’ll multiply your pain in childbearing. You will bring forth these crazy ideas, these strange gods. “I’ll multiply your pain in childbearing…in pain you shall bring forth children; yet your desire shall be for your husband.” It will never move from God. God is the center, and man no matter what he does—if he gets plastered and he gets drunk, falls into the gutter—he’s still seeking God. That’s what he’s doing, he’s seeking God. Everyone is seeking God. So your desire shall be for your husband, no matter what you do. So while she was plastered for fifteen years with vino, with wine she was still seeking her husband. And it wasn’t her husband who came from Denmark; it was her true husband. “Your Maker is your husband; the Lord of hosts is his name” (Is. 54:5).
In the end, everyone is saved by the birth of the child. In Paul’s 1st letter to Timothy, the 2nd chapter, in the King James and Revised Standard Versions, it is translated that “woman is saved by bearing children” (verse 15). That’s false. There’s a footnote in the Rev. Std. Ver. that shows you the real Greek, and the translation of it means “by the bearing of the child.” It’s definitive. It’s not bearing children, bearing all these ideas, but bearing the child. When one yields completely to the gospel story and completely gives himself over to it and becomes wedded to it, whoever is the spokesman of that moment expressing the story, the real story, well then, God in you, your husband, will assume the mask and masquerade himself as that being, and you will have union with that being. It’s your own husband, the Lord God, the Holy One within you. The Lord of hosts is his name. He will take on that mask and bear only the child. Ideas related to the child, yes, will come into your world and you’ll express them. But he will bring forth the child.
So here, should you have these experiences, don’t feel strange about it and don’t condemn yourself. No man living in this world could tell me he hasn’t had similar experiences, no woman. If you resist the idea in dream, it’s because the idea is foreign to you. It will come. You’ll find something in your dream and it will be strange to you, and you will not accept it though the proposal is made. But when it’s something you really want to externalize and express in this world, good, bad or indifferent, you will yield in spite of the whole vast world looking on, and find no shame in it, none whatsoever. It will be the most normal, natural thing in the world. And this is the world in which we live.
Now we are told, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”—you’ll read this in the 9th chapter of Luke (verse 18)—and they answered, “John the Baptist; but others say, Elijah; and others, one of the old prophets has risen.” Then he turned to them and asked, “But who do you say I am?” And Peter became the spokesman for the disciples and answered, “You are the Christ of God.” He commanded him not to tell this to anyone; for said he, “The Son of man must suffer…and he will suffer and be rejected by the elders. He will be rejected by the chief priests and the scribes, and he’ll be killed, but on the third day he will rise again.” He did not deny the confession of Peter. He accepted the confession, but he declined to make it public until he had re-interpreted the popular Messianic concept in terms of his own experience. The whole vast world, the intelligent world, all the intelligentsia, will deny it. He called them “the scribes, the chief priests, and the elders”—the traditions of the world. And from time to time one comes who has experienced this story and he tells it, and all the elders, the scribes and the chief priests will deny him and resist him. It’s eternally so. So do not tell it, he said, until I have re-interpreted it in terms of my own experience, and then I will show you what it really is like as against what it is supposed to be like based upon the scribes and the traditions of men.
So they tell you that it will come from without; I tell you it will not come from without. I tell you God became man that man may become God, that the whole vast world is yourself pushed out, and that self is God, and he’s playing all the parts. He’ll let you go no matter where you want to go, and he’ll play the part. So he’ll appear this night in your dream playing any part if you’re in love with it. You will have an affair, and it’s your Father, your husband, who’s playing the part. He could play the part of a Stalin, a Hitler, if you’re in love with that idea, that state of consciousness. You will give yourself willingly and yield in no time flat to the union, and you will multiply and perpetuate that idea, that state, in the world; even though you’re ashamed when you face the one who bears your name or whose name you bear, and you thought, “How could I have done it? Where was my reason when I yielded?” You had no choice in the matter, for he in you, your husband who is your Maker, he is playing the part. He plays every part. He plays the part of the animal in your life. You meet a dog in dream; he’s playing that part too. You meet a cat, you meet a bird, all these parts he is playing, but everything. He is a protean being…that’s who God is and God is in you. And at the very end you become one; you aren’t two, for now he’s going to leave everything and cleave to his wife and they become one being, one body, one Spirit, one Lord, one God and Father of all.
Now let me share with you the letter that came yesterday. I have been waiting for it now since the 15th of December. She gives a prelude to the story—an almost total stranger that night or that evening, and so this casual acquaintance and four others, and they got together; and then she dropped off the casual acquaintance and took the other four to their homes, and then returned home. She hadn’t parked the car…she went into her home—she lives in a canyon, a small canyon, a rustic canyon—so she went into her home and the phone is ringing, and it’s the casual acquaintance asking her to please come back to Los Angeles, she needs her badly. So she got back into her car, went back, and she saw the lady was quite distressed, emotionally upset. So she said to the lady, “Join me for dinner,” she willingly accepted, and she took her out to dinner. She said that she ate heartily and seemed to enjoy it. “When I took her back to her home, she said, ‘Don’t take me in yet. Would you mind walking a few blocks with me?’” She said, “I put my arm through hers and walked her six blocks, long blocks and then I said, ‘Don’t you think we should go back now?’ She said, ‘Alright,’ so I took her back. She said, ‘Please come inside’ and then she said to me, ‘Don’t leave me tonight. Will you please sleep here?’” Well, she said, “I’m not in the habit of sleeping elsewhere, I have my own home, and I don’t sleep out unless I leave the city and go on a vacation, or go on a definite visit…but I don’t really leave my home. Furthermore, I have two elderly neighbors and they depend upon me, and so I must go back and first of all turn on my lights in my home, and then notify my neighbors where I will be and why.” She consented to that, so she went, turned on the lights, notified the neighbors, and came back.
And the lady wanted her to read certain things from the Christian Science magazine, which she did; then she asked her to read other things, took the magazine and put it in the Science and Health ; asked her to read something else. “That took me almost two hours to read it. At the end I said, ‘Shouldn’t we retire?’ Well, she consented to that. I took my bearings just where I am, because this was strange house; I do not know the lady, this is a strange lady. So I went to my bed and she went to her room, and I noticed she hadn’t turned off her light for quite awhile, and then I fell asleep, and undoubtedly she did. At 3:30 in the morning, here, a peculiar cool wind is coming from the corner of my room. Then the room takes on an eerie light, the whole thing is a peculiar eerie light. Then out of the nowhere…I didn’t see them approaching…my two brothers. I haven’t seen them in forty years. My two brothers, I only have two, and my two brothers came and my landlord. My older brother said, ‘But she is too old to have a baby’; and then he added, speaking of the baby, ‘He is like a della Robbia!’ Then he takes this infant and it’s all wrapped in swaddling clothes and puts it into my arms. I take the child, this baby, and I began to smile as I’m looking at it, and the child responded with the most glorious, heavenly smile…these blue eyes, this fair complexion, and it reaches out. As it reaches out, the three witnesses disappear, the child disappears, and here I am on the bed.”
Now, della Robbia is a family of Italian artists who lived in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Andria specialized in the Christ child, these beautiful sculptures and paintings and frescoes of the Christ child, also the Madonna. There are beautiful works of the Madonna by della Robbia, the whole family, but this one specialize in the Christ child. And the brother is saying, “He looks like a della Robbia.”
Now, five months later, she said, “I live in a canyon, it’s a very rustic canyon, and coming down the rustic side of the canyon, here is this blond boy, blue-eyed blond, in his teens, a little bit taller than I am. I knew that he was David. He came by and walked down, moving towards the sea until he was simply a blur. I didn’t have to ask him ‘Whose son are you?’ because I knew.” Then she said, “Four months later, here I am, it’s 3:30 in the morning, and what sounded like the rumbling of an earthquake, a fantastic earthquake plus a sonic boom. The bed shook, I trembled, I was frightened, and then my entire”—she used the word spine—“was completely broken from top to bottom. And I felt myself outside of my body looking at it as though I were another, as though this is happening to someone else; for I am outside looking at this severed body that had been severed from top to bottom. Then as I am looking at it here comes a jerk and I am back in the body. When the body was split in two from top to bottom it seemed that the left shoulder and the left part of the body had fallen a bit. And I still felt that it’s another, something is happening to someone else. It can’t be me, and yet I felt I came out of it. Then when I was jerked back into it, I knew that it was my very being, for I was in pain on the left side of my body. And that was it.” Now she waits eagerly for the fourth which is the descent of the dove.
So I can’t tell you my thrill when I look into this audience and see how many are awakening. The words of scripture, again the 9th chapter of Luke, “Truly, truly I say to you, there are some here who shall not taste of death ’til they have seen the kingdom of God” (verse 27). The babe is the kingdom of God…that is the key into it. As Simeon said and he held the child in his arms, “Now, Lord, let thy servant depart in peace; for my eyes have seen the salvation of Israel” (verse 29). So to have held the child is to witness the kingdom of God. It’s a character, not a place. It’s a new use of power, an entirely different concept of power; it’s a creative power. So the kingdom of heaven is simply a character, where you are one with God…a creative power. You create what you want. Go into a place where these things are done, you make your kingdom, you make your world. So the child is the symbol of your entrance into the kingdom. So he said, “There are some standing here who will not taste of death”—to taste is to experience. You will not experience the phenomena that men call death before you have this experience, which is the kingdom of God.
Now when I look into this audience, you can count on your fingers and see so many and so many others on the verge of it, my thrill is beyond bounds. For if you owned the entire world and didn’t have it, what would it matter? Here tonight there are those with a billion, two billion, personal fortunes, and they will tomorrow leave it all behind to find themselves restored in a body same as before in a world just like this, terrestrial, with the same struggles. They’ll go all over again making this same blind union with strange things in this world, still seeking God. For, your husband shall rule over you and your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name. You will go into strange lands and have union with strange states, and the state is always personified in scripture, always. For Man personifies a state. You’re in love with a certain state, well, that state will confront you in your dream. And who is wearing it? Your husband is masquerading as that being, without that person’s consent or knowledge. He’s the innocent bystander and he doesn’t even know that he was used that night because he personified certain beliefs. He simply inflamed your mind and you accepted his beliefs, then you confront him in your dream…and your Father confronts you. So, all the characters of scripture are simply played by God.
He plays the part of the angel when he comes to Abraham and Sarah. You read it carefully. You’ll see it moves from the angel’s voice to God’s voice; the angel’s voice to God’s voice, one and the same thing. So he comes to Sarah or to Abraham, he said, “Your wife Sarah shall have a son,” and Sarah laughed because they were both old, they were ancient, and it had long ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women (Gen.17:16). Now what is that child? That’s the child of which I speak—not other children—that child promised to Sarah. Sarah is in everyone. We are his emanation and he’s promised us…in spite of our age. For we have suffered, let no one tell you we haven’t suffered! As Blake put it so beautifully, “And who he has afflicted for secret ends, he comforts and heals and calls them friends.” So you go astray; he’s going to bring you back. “You shall have no other Lord but the Lord thy God, who is your husband.” He’s going to cleave to you until you become one, not two. So you go astray after all kinds of gods, all kinds of states; he’ll bring you back, but you go through suffering. All the pains of the world are the Messianic pains of childbearing. So you go to this one, that one, the other one, and he brings you back, and finally you head towards the one husband, and fall in love with his promise. You fall in love with his promise and then you’ll meet someone who personifies that story. That one will have union with you, and he is totally innocent as a person. He doesn’t know unless you tell him when you write him. But he is totally unaware that the fact that you fell in love with the ideas that he sponsors and proclaims that he got from the Father. It came down from on high and he sent me to tell you.
If you believe it, all right. But chances are such an experience could be, has been, or will be yours. If you reject it, may I tell you, I could not be in your dream save as one that you reject and despise and will simply throw aside. But I, a person called Neville, may I tell you, I am totally unaware, totally innocent of anything that happened to you when you conjure me to play a certain role, for the one who is doing it is your husband. He’s leading you towards what you are now believing and he’ll play that part in your dream. You change your beliefs, adopt another belief, and he’ll assume that mask and play that part. But you must always multiply and replenish the earth with the ideas with which you are in love. So let no one think that Communism can be rubbed out by war or Democracy rubbed out by war. If I really believe in Democracy as a principle of government which I consider the best, kill me, but you can’t kill the idea. Shoot me, cut off my head, but you can’t destroy my conviction that it is the best form of government. Rotten as it is, yes.
When I read the morning’s paper that people are so stunned and so taken aback because of some, well, stealing in government…where all these elected to high office, as now is taking place in New York City…the mayor’s right hand man, who comes from an excellent family. His father-in-law is one of the great Lodges, Lodge of Connecticut, governor, and Lodge family of Massachusetts, the old families. Here he is, the son-in-law, he got behind the eight ball financially and then began to put his hand into the till with all kinds of bribes. Now it’s an awful mess politically. Why should we be taken aback when we see dishonesty among officials when from the very beginning they are encouraged by the example of those above them to make what gain they can from their vocations? They’re encouraged by it. They see what the other one did and seemingly got away with it. Then he got so high they couldn’t touch him. So they see this…this is all part of the play. And then others will simply wed themselves to that state of consciousness, and then they suffer. This is bearing the children.
The dishonor tonight in the Lodge family and in this fellow’s family…his name is Marcus…he has to face all these things. He came out of this so-called wonderful background; a Yale boy, intellectual fellow, scholastically perfect, he’s part of the Ivy League, and all this nonsense. Suddenly comes the boom because he wedded himself to a false god, and so, “I’ll increase and multiply your pain in childbearing.” Are these the ideas you want to bear in this world? I’ll multiply the pain by which you bear them, and “in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” The Lord is always ruling, and he will assume any role and play it for you. He’ll play the part of anything in this world. But he’s leading you towards himself, and when you meet him, the one God, you and he are one, and you’ve gone through the gamut.
So as Blake said, “Joy and woe are woven fine, a garment for the soul divine.” Now let this thought be with you, it’s a true revelation as he gave it to us in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: “God only acts and is in existing beings or men.” Let it burn itself into you. I think, well, that’s God acting…a thought is God in action. I imagine something, that’s God in action. God only acts and is in existing beings or men. So every moment of time, whether I’m in this world which we call the waking world—which it is not, it’s the world of sleep—or in the world we call the world of sleep, which it is, he only acts. And here he plays all the parts, and in the world of dream he plays all the parts. When I conjure this dream this night—if I should dream and bring it back—he will play the part best suited to instruct me what state at the moment I am attached to or in love with. I am toying with a certain state and do I really like it? Well then, he’ll play the part and he’ll personify the state for me, and I will yield and become one with him. Then I will awake tomorrow morning with the memory of what has happened and multiply my world with that state, that idea. Go out and give my life to get it over to the whole vast world…even though it’s the most nonsensical thing in the world.
Whether it be someone who calls himself the redeemer like Trujillo. He was a redeemer…he only stole a half-billion dollars from little Santo Domingo…a half-billion! Now all his family are out and they’re living all over the world with their ill-gotten gains. Of course, they got him eventually and just made a sieve of his body, in spite of all the protection. Then we had one in Ghana, he was the redeemer of all Africa. When they finally got him out—went off to see the great one in China, the great Mao—while he was gone they investigated the treasury and it was empty. He only got away with something like a few million dollars. A poor country that had nothing and he took it all…but he was going to redeem all Africa. Now he can’t get back. And all over the world people fall in love with these because they seem to be glamorous, and “if I could only find out how he did it, how he got these millions, and then duplicate it.” So they find him in “soft Beulah’s night,” and he becomes the mask that their Father wears, who is their husband, and union takes place, and they come out to perpetuate it. But, oh, the sorrows that will follow…and sorrow after sorrow after sorrow…until the child is born. When that is born, it’s all over. The 16th chapter of John: “When a woman is in labor and this awful pain possesses her,” we’re told, “but only because the hour has come; but after the child is delivered, she has no memory of the anguish, for joy that a child has been born into the world” (verse 21).
Now he tells the story in the most beautiful manner. People don’t quite understand what he is talking about, because really ninety percent of the women of the world have no pain in childbearing. They’re hoeing the fields in China, Africa, India, South America, and parts of our land, never saw a doctor in their lives when the hour is upon them, and they have it like you would take out a loose tooth. I have a sister-in-law, my wife’s older sister, she’s had three girls. The hour is upon her, all she has to do is yawn and child comes. Yet she was raised in comfort, raised in all the modern things of our world. She has never known what it is…when people talk of having pain in bearing the child she doesn’t know what it’s all about. Her last, the third child, I recall it vividly. She went to the hospital, got in there, loved to go there because she gets all the food they’re going to give her, and she’s waited on instead of cooking at home herself, and so she ordered up the biggest dinner. Well, the nurse didn’t know…so the nurse brought her this enormous dinner. When the pediatrician arrived and she’s half way through, he screamed, “Who dared to give you this? You’re going straight to the delivery room.” Well, she wanted to finish it she was so enjoying it. She barely got through the door, the baby’s born. So talk about childbearing is a painful thing…with ninety percent of the women of the world it is not.
So what is this…for life is bearing children and life is very painful. You must pay rent or face the consequences. You must buy food or go hungry. You must buy clothes or be embarrassed. You must pay taxes. And someone has just expressed the thought, they’re trying so hard, been working on it for years, to find out how to tax us for breathing. They can tax us for food, even water. Water is an essential. Man could not long endure without water, and it’s taxed. They can’t quite find how to tax the air. So we’re pressed to the very bursting point with taxation, all of us. Isn’t that painful? You go to work and you work hard, and at the end of the year he tells you…who’s he? An invisible being that doesn’t exist…they say Uncle Sam and it doesn’t exist. There is no Uncle Sam, and yet he puts his hands in our pockets and takes from us what we could use in a far better way than how they’re using it. We just bought $25,000 of a little salt water…salt water! Some Italian fellow had the brilliant idea to sell our government little bottles of salt water. He picked it up in the Caribbean. Is that better salt water than where they are in Viet Nam? We bought $25,000 worth of little salt water in little vials. His profit was $25,000. Cost nothing…what were the vials, cost nothing. Well, multiply that by the millions that we are wasting, and whose money? Ours!
So you see, the third chapter, the 16th verse, is true, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing.” You want these ideas about war and the glamour that goes with it, and you want all these things and the glamour that goes with it, I’ll multiply your pain in childbearing; and in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire—and it will be forever—shall be for your husband; and the Lord, your Maker, is your husband. So for him, even though you don’t know it, it’s going to be for him. And going through all the pain of bearing these crazy ideas into the world finally you’ll come to the gospel. You’ll hear a story that is the most incredible story in the world: How God actually became man that man may become God, and that God is a father. And to prove to that man that he actually gave himself to him, that man will see his only son David. David, looking into his face, male or female, will know, and she or he who sees David will know. As this lady said, “I did not have to ask him, ‘Whose son are you?’ I knew.” So everyone comes to that and then the drama is over. You stop giving yourself to false gods and you have wedded your husband. And he, because you become one, if he has a son and I become one with him, well then, his son is my son. Here I stand before my son; for we aren’t God and…it’s only God…and I am he. And here is my son.
So David said, “I will tell of the decree of the Lord: He said unto me, ‘Thou art my son, today I have begotten thee’” (Ps.2:7). Here is the divine formula of salvation: When the son comes. First comes the child, the 9th chapter of Isaiah, “For unto us is born a child, to us a son is given” (verse 6). The child is born…della Robbia, yes, perfect; but the Son is given. The child is the symbol, a sign of the event that took place that you were born into an entirely different world, a creative world. But now come five months later and the Son is given. And because he is God’s Son when you see him—he always was, you didn’t just get him—there never was a time that you were not his Father. It simply suddenly grows within you, and he who now becomes one with you. For he left all and he cleaved unto you, his emanation, yet his wife, ’til this great sleep of death is past; and then suddenly the Son is given.
Now let us go into the Silence.

Q: (inaudible)
A: My dear, if I understand your question correctly…no, I think it’s very clear. You are always in a state of consciousness. When I use the word “state” I don’t quite complete it, but I take for granted you know I mean a state of consciousness. So there are states, infinite states of consciousness. If I take a platform and I go wild, telling you that you are far more important than any other person in this world because of the pigment of your skin; and I start ranting—regardless of whether I am a white man or a black man. There are black men who are telling all the audience that we are the important ones, we’re going to kill the white; and there are whites who are saying we’re going to kill the black. But, if anyone in the audience can fall for that nonsense, really fall in love with it where they’d like to see it put into effect, alright. If the one who is voicing this is the one that really inflames their mind in soft Beulah’s night, the night of dream, God in the one who is so inflamed will masquerade as the speaker and have union because they want to multiply and perpetuate these ideas. He doesn’t care if they are stupid ideas. So you suffer because of your choice.
So as Blake said in his Vision of the Last Judgment, “You can see from what I’ve said that I do not consider either the just or the wicked to be in a supreme state, but to be every one of them states of the sleep which the soul may fall into in its deadly dreams of good and evil when it leaves paradise following the serpent.” So we’re brought into the world of death and then we are lost in these states. There are people who really believe…look at the nonsense in our generations. It only lasted a few years, but, my Lord, what horrors in the few years. Stalin lasted after the death of Lenin, who died in ’53 I think it was, but look at the horror. Look at the horror of a Hitler. But the ideas haven’t died. They haven’t died, they’re still part of the world because people so fell in love with them. They thought by wedding this I’ll become important and rub out all the others, they’ll become my slaves. So they wed it, and then these things come to be.
Now, fall in love with the gospel, the story that sets man free, where God actually became you. He loves you, you are his bride, his woman, and he’s leaving everything and cleaving to you. But you’ve got to believe his story. His story is that he has a Son; he’s going to give you that Son. Before that Son is given to you, you must be born from this world, and the symbol of the birth is going to be a child, the Christ child. You’re going to hold that Christ child in your hands, and the child is called Isaac, which means “he laughs.” You’ll take Isaac in your hands and he’s going to smile. You will smile, and then the witnesses and the child all disappear, but the event has taken place. On the heels of it comes now “the Son is given” and that Son is David. So I have to re-interpret the story. So I will say, if you feel qualified to tell it, yes, but don’t tell it until I have completely re-interpreted the story in terms of my own experience…that’s what he is telling the disciples. He commanded them not to tell it to anyone and then he told them why. If you feel qualified to tell it, all well and good, but let me first tell it.
I’ve told it to the best or my ability and I’ve told it in my last book under the headline of Resurrection. I’ve noticed in a casual reading, he made the corrections that I asked of him, all but one, and then he added one that I didn’t put there. So there is one word misspelled, he calls it “nough” instead of enough; and then Bethlehemite…which I asked please to put Bethlehemite. At least we did have in the last copy, we had Bethelmite. I said Bethlehemite, but he dropped off everything and now has Bethemite. So, it’s perfectly alright…you in reading it, you’ll know it means Bethlehemite. So he missed that one and he missed a word. But all the other corrections he did, took them all out and added what should be there, and changed it beautifully. But these two to me they’re glaring, but reading it casually the average person wouldn’t see it. You see “nough” and it’s enough.
In fact, the first time I ever sat at the top of the class when I was a boy in Barbados—I was always at the bottom; cricket and soccer and these things meant more to me than all this nonsense in the class. I was always dreaming. He said, “Neville, you’re dreaming.” I was dreaming of cricket, dreaming of soccer, dreaming of winning. One day we started, and we had this nonsense where you ask the first one and if he couldn’t answer it and the second one could, he took the place. We kept all the way down, and if one over here answered, he went all the way up to the top, and he got it. The master asked a question and this boy at the top of the class said “nough.” Next “nough”… nough, nough, nough….the one at the very bottom, I said, “enough.” “Goddard go to the top of the class.” He should have stopped right there, but we had another three minutes to go and I was about midway down by then. But I hit the top of the class. The first time I ever got there because I said “enough.” So now this word is so part of my mind when I came to this world and it said “nough,” my mind jumped back and here it should be “enough,” it’s “nough.”
Good night.
