20 Sep Neville Goddard Lectures: “Faith” (1968)
2/5/68
Tonight’s subject is “Faith.” We can have faith in a thing, faith in a person. Tonight it would be faith in a person, and the person is Jesus Christ. So I hope I can introduce you to him tonight. We are told in the Book of Hebrews that “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. By faith we understand that the world was created by the Word of God, so that what is seen was made out of things which do not appear”. That’s the definition given in the 11th chapter of the Book of Hebrews (verses 1, 3)..
Now here in the Hebraic world a rabbi is the father of his converts. Paul called his followers “my children. He said, “My little children, with whom I am again in travail until Christ is formed in you” (Gal.4:19). He can’t go beyond that…he has to relinquish that position when Christ is formed in the follower…“until Christ is formed in you.” Then he said this in his 1st letter to the Corinthians, you find it in the 4th chapter, “For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Jesus Christ through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me” (verse 15). Now you listen to it carefully, for you will see tonight who Paul meant when he spoke of Christ Jesus. He defines Christ Jesus as “the power and the wisdom of God” (1Cor. 1:24). So when he said you have countless guides in Christ, there are as many guides to your success as there are people in the world. Ask anyone, “What should I do to get a job?” “Well, are you qualified?” they will say. Well then, qualify yourself, that’s their suggestion. Or, do you know the right people? Try to meet the right people, join the right clubs, live on the right side of the street. You will have just as many directions towards your objective as there are people that you ask in this world.
So you have countless guides in the operation of this law. For he’s speaking of Christ as a power, as a creative power; but eventually he personalizes it, when it’s formed in you. It was formed in him. But it’s formed in him that he knew to whom he could turn. Until it’s formed in you, he challenges you to test it. He said, “Come test yourselves and see. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless of course you fail to meet the test!” (2:Cor. 13:5). Well then, how is Jesus Christ in me, in you, in all of us? All these guides in the use of this power, where is he? I tell you from my own personal experience that Jesus Christ—who is called in scripture Jesus Christ the Word of God, as we quoted from Hebrews, “that by faith we understand that the world was created by The Word of God.” We are told in the 19th chapter of Revelation, “And his name shall be called the Word of God” (verse 13). We are told in the first three verses of first John, “By him all things were made”—he is the Word of God—“and without him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:3). That is Christ Jesus…he’s the Word of God who created the world and all things within it, good, bad and indifferent. Well then, who is he? Let me tell you that Christ Jesus is like your own wonderful imagining. That’s Christ Jesus…like pure imagining. “He works in the depth of your soul and he underlies all of your faculties, including your perception, but he streams into your surface mind least disguised in the form of creative fancy”…just creative fancy.
Now this is what it means how to test him and how to actually try him. I am not in the habit of wearing a little rose or any flower on the platform, I just don’t do it. I was going over my thoughts today concerning what I would tell you tonight. I’m going to ask you to hold in your hand a rose, and I said to myself, a red rose. But any color that suits your purpose. Just take a rose…now detect its fragrance. You can, you can actually get the aroma that comes from a rose right now as you’re seated here. Without the physical rose in your hand, you can hold one in your imaginary hand. Feel the soft velvet touch as you put your hand on the rose…get the fragrance of the rose…that’s all that you do. Then why…“He calls a thing that is not now seen as though it were seen and then the unseen becomes seen.” That’s the 4th chapter, the 17th verse of Romans. He calls that which is not now seen as though it were seen and then the unseen becomes seen.
So I did that today just out of…just to experiment, not for one moment thinking in terms of a rose coming to me. A lady, who is here tonight, and she doesn’t bring me roses or flowers, and she said to me, ‘Would you wear this rose tonight?” I said, I don’t have a buttonhole. That was my reaction to her. Well, she said, “I have a pin” and so she gave me the rose. I say, man is an ego-centric being. He is a protean being playing all the parts in the world. She is myself pushed out. I trusted Jesus Christ, well, who is Jesus Christ?—my own wonderful human Imagination, that’s Jesus Christ. There never was another Jesus Christ and there never will be another Jesus Christ. There is only Jesus Christ, the Creator of the world…all things in the world, even the simple little thing like a rose. So when she picked the few roses and brought them from her garden, she had no idea she was simply executing a simple experiment on my own part at home today: To ask you to hold in your hand a rose. Not a physical rose. He calls a thing that is not seen as though it were seen and then the unseen becomes seen. That’s how he creates the whole vast world.
So we understand that through faith the whole vast world was created by the Word of God, and the Word of God is your own wonderful human Imagination. That is faith in him, so you have faith in Jesus Christ, not some being on the outside. So if anyone would ever say to you, “Look, there is Christ or here he is,” believe him not. Don’t believe anyone who points outside to any being who is Jesus Christ; for Jesus Christ is the creative power of the universe, and he’s your own wonderful human Imagination. “For it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know when he appears we shall know him, for we shall be like him” (1John3:2). We shall see him just as…because we shall be like him. He becomes us; we become him.
So, as he said, “Until Christ be formed in you”…I can’t be your father beyond the point that Christ is formed in you. Until he’s formed in you, I can be in the teacher’s role that of the rabbi, the father, father of my children, until he’s formed in you. Because when he’s formed in you, he reveals the true meaning of the “fatherhood” of God. He reveals himself in you as God, and you are a father: “No one knows the Son”—if I’m a father, there’s a son—“and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him” (Mat. 11:27). So when he unveils himself in you, it’s only through the Son. What Son?—the Son of God. Who is that Son?—David. So, David calls you in the Spirit “my Lord, my Father” (Ps. 89:26). Then and only then do you really know who you are…that you’re God the Father. So the whole vast world is being played by one being, it’s God the Father. And the whole is contained in the seeming part. So the whole vast world is pushed out from every part. He is omnipresent. So right now in you God abides and he is your own wonderful human Imagination.
So I ask you to test it. “Come test yourself and see. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?” So you take it in the most simple way, no matter what it is in this world. You want a better job, greater income, greater recognition? Well now, what would you do right now if it were true? How would you see it? Well now, bring it right before your mind’s eye as you would the rose. Bring it in the face of a friend who would congratulate you on your good fortune. Do you have a friend who really would be thrilled because of our good fortune, your improvement in the world? Bring him right before your mind’s eye and have him tell you how thrilled he is because of your good fortune. Now that is an imaginal act, that is God in action and all things are possible to God. You don’t have to devise the means necessary to make it come to pass. He who brought it into your mind’s eye, who conceived the whole scene, he will bring it. He will actually and quickly build a bridge of incidence across which you will move to the fulfillment of that which you have done.
It will come so quickly and so simply that you’ll be amazed. Like tonight, certainly this lady is not in the habit of bringing me a flower, and I don’t wear flowers on the platform, but I couldn’t help when I saw her with these flowers and then she said, “I got it from my garden today and would you please wear this tonight. Pick out the one you want,” and then she picked out the red one. She had yellow ones, she had others, but she picked out the very red. For I intended that it’s vivid in the mind’s eye and we associate the rose usually with the blush of blood rather than the yellow. So I ask you to try it in the most simple way, for a job—not only for yourself but for an extension of yourself called “another” for his good fortune, her good fortune, whatever it is in this world. Just try it.
Now let me share with you these two perfectly marvelous letters that came this week. The lady writes, “Last Monday night, that is a week ago tonight, as I sat in the Silence, I heard the cry of a child. For a moment I thought it was my little baby Larry and I listened— but a mother can detect the cry of her child among a hundred children—and then I realized that it wasn’t Larry’s voice. Larry is simply a little infant and this was not Larry’s voice. I listened and it was the cry of the ages. It was an infant but a cry I had never heard before. I can only describe it as the cry of all the ages put together that arouses man from his deep sleep and sets him free into eternal joy.” Now she said, “I have had on two occasions the most wonderful singing, heavenly singing, and it is heavenly singing, but it doesn’t compare to this cry of the child. This is something entirely different, the cry of the child that awakens man to eternal life.” It reminded me of Blake’s Urizen, the 7th chapter, “And the dead heard the voice of the child and began to awake from sleep. All things heard the voice of the child and began to awake to life.” Now, that’s her letter, her experience in this audience. She said, “When you came out of the Silence and said ‘Good’ and began to ask for questions, I was still hearing the cry of the child.” She said, “I could have jumped through my skin, jumped out of the chair with the thrill of hearing that voice that I’d never heard before.”
Now, here comes the other letter. She said, “I had this dream. In my dream my daughter phoned me and asked me to come to her because she needed me. She begged me to come. She was alone and she was going to have a baby. So I went to the address she gave. When I got to the place and entered, it was one small one-room apartment, cluttered, and not a pleasant looking place. I switched on the light and here she turned on the bed. As I looked at her, it wasn’t my daughter but it was her friend Sharon.” I forgot to tell you, the first experience of the lady in this audience her name is Sharon. “That it was her friend Sharon. I looked at her and strangely enough I knew it was not my daughter but my daughter’s friend Sharon. Well, I so loved her, I loved her as my daughter and thought I will accept her as my daughter. Then I found in my hand this newborn boy child wrapped in a blanket. Something in me felt…half of me felt this is Sharon’s baby and yet I felt it is my baby. Then it shifted and I’m going to the hospital to see Sharon. When I arrived at the hospital and saw Sharon, she looked so much improved over that state where she was prior to this delivery. She said to me, ‘I’ve gotten in touch with my father and he’s coming to see me, but I’m not quite sure that he will want to be my father any more.’” Then she knew that her father was Neville, and she said to herself, “I must go to Neville first and talk to him before he sees Sharon, because he may hurt her when he denies her from now on as his child.”
So she went to the nursery and asked for her baby, and the nurse brought out the baby. I was standing there…and as the baby was brought out, she and I looked at this little boy and in his sleep he smiled. As he smiled he yawned, and as he yawned he displayed two perfectly formed lower teeth. Then I turn to her with an expression on my face as if to say to her, “Don’t you remember this most important thing? Have you forgotten?” Then I said to her, “Of course all the children of my family are born with two perfectly formed teeth!” and I turned and walked away.
If you know Bible, so much is said of teeth and the tooth. The Psalmist calls upon Jehovah to break the teeth of the wicked. Job said, “The righteous shall break the fangs”—it’s translated there but the same word—“the fangs of the unrighteous to set free the innocent” (29:17). In the New Testament, those who refuse to accept the doctrine of Christ because they are busy about making more and more of the shadows of the world, when the door opens and the righteous go into the kingdom of heaven, they weep and gnash their teeth. They show their remorse and their anger because they are now shut out of the kingdom of heaven. All their time is given over to, well, the affairs of men. They love the glamour of man and the praise of man and the honors that man can heap upon them. They so wanted it above all things else that they paid no attention to the invitation to enter into the kingdom of God and live by this principle. No, they will meet the right people. Forget that! I will go live on the right side of the tracks. I’ll move beyond my means and live there, because that’s the way to get on in this world. And know the right ones and always brag about “Who do you think I saw today for lunch?” Did they pay your luncheon bill? “No.” So you’re so proud you saw them. They were at some other table and they looked toward you, and you smiled and thought they knew you, and you’re so proud of this phoniness. Well, that’s the world, the whole vast world. And these are the countless guides in Christ, all phony. So when the moment comes and those who abided by the doctrine of Christ enter in then comes the weeping and gnashing of teeth.
But when Christ is formed in you…and I can say to the lady who wrote me the letter, no, I cannot be her father any more. I can bring her this far and no farther. Your vision, which you wrote me and hers that she had here, is a foreshadowing of an imminent birth…it’s imminent. What can I do beyond the birth of Christ in man? When Christ is formed in man then he reveals himself in that man in whom he is formed as God the Father. It’s not one revealing himself as God the Father; he’s become you, he’s formed in you, you are God the Father. Then you can face anything in this world; it doesn’t matter what “they” say. What does it matter what anyone who thinks himself wise in the language of God would tell me? What on earth is he going to tell me? If I met the Pope tonight and he thinks because he plays this position in the world…or I met the Archbishop of Canterbury and he thinks that he is the head of the Church of England…or I meet the head rabbi and he thinks he is going to give me…what can he tell me! If I asked him a simple question, Do you know David? Has David called you, “my Father”? Have you met him in the spirit and has he called you Father? Then what are you talking about! You do not know who Jesus Christ is. Jesus Christ is your own wonderful human Imagination. It’s being formed in you into the likeness of God the Father, and when it’s completely formed, it’s born, born from above. And when it’s born from above, it goes through the steps.
The next step is to discover the fatherhood of God. Then, to take the very blood by which you were made real, for it was a sacrificial thing, when God crucified himself on me. And then that very blood is my very being and up I go—after the whole thing is split—into the kingdom of heaven. Then comes the descent of the Holy Spirit in bodily form as a dove, and rests upon me and abides upon me. It remains there and smothers me with love. So what are you going to tell me about the mystery of Christ?
So I can say to her who had the experience here, and to the lady who wrote the letter, who had it in the form of a dream, it was perfect. And it’s all awakening right here in this small audience…those who will accept it. For I’m telling you what I know, not speculating, I’m not theorizing. I am telling you what I know from experience. I have experienced scripture and scripture is the Word of God, and the Word of God is your own wonderful human Imagination, personalized in scripture as Jesus Christ.
Now, test it tonight. You want a better job, you want more money, you want this, that or the other, well, whatever you want, do it just as simply as I did it with the flower. You want a better suit of clothes? Put it on and wear it as though you wore it now. It doesn’t matter how it comes. Just put it on, just as though you had it. You want a better job? Where would you sit if you had it? How would your wife see you or how would your husband see you if you had it…whatever you want in this world? Well then, begin to assume it and live it just as though it were true, and have faith in Jesus Christ; for Jesus Christ in scripture, if you understand scripture, is the creative power and wisdom of God. People have personified it and made little icons of it and then they worship something on the wall and go and cross themselves before some little thing that is made with human hands. No, God the creator of the world “is like pure imagining in us, and he works in the very depths of our souls, underlying all of our faculties, including perception, but he streams into our surface mind least disguised in the form of creative fancy.” So you catch him in the act.
We are going to discuss tonight with those who come, and you want them to believe it, just what to do with it to test it. So in your own mind’s eye…because I’m very fond of flowers, I love flowers…and what else, so you hold it in your hand. I could smell the flower, the radiant wonderful aroma that came from it. I could feel that soft velvety petal, and then I placed it, as I will tonight, in a crystal vase. I have two teardrops at home, a tall one and a small one, where you can see through the crystal, see the stem. Then I saw today the water, the water level. I do not fill it to the top, but I do fill it to, say, an inch or inch and a half from the top, so I saw the water level. Then I saw through the crystal vase the single rose in the crystal vase. Then in a matter of moments—I didn’t make any effort to do it and she certainly doesn’t give me any flowers. I can say to her now, don’t make a habit of it. It’s lovely that she did it and I love her for doing it, but this is only a test at home, just a simple little thing to describe to you what I mean by, well, spiritual imagining.
Blake defines Imagination as spiritual sensation. Right now, feel a tennis ball. Can you feel it? Well now, feel a baseball. They’re not the same are they? Well, feel the kind of a ball that you would have at the pool that you would toss to each other. It certainly doesn’t feel like a baseball or a tennis ball. Feel a golf ball, and that differs. If you can discriminate between all these different balls, well then, they are not unreal…unreal to the mortal eye but they’re not unreal or you couldn’t discriminate. You can’t discriminate between a series of nothing. How can you discriminate between nothing? Nothing is no-thing. But if I can touch in my mind’s eye a tennis ball and see the difference between that and a baseball, then they do exist…but unseen by mortal eye. So he calls a thing that is not seen by mortal eye as though it were, and then the unseen becomes seen.
So this is what I mean by faith. It’s faith in Jesus Christ, but Jesus Christ is not in the pages of history 2,000 years ago. Jesus Christ is contemporary. God himself came and comes into human history in the person of Jesus Christ. So he came into my life in the person of Jesus Christ. Where is he?—my own wonderful human Imagination. For I know how this power came into being, and if all things are made by him and I know what I did, then I’ve found him. If I can trace the event, the phenomena back to its origin and find the origin as my own imaginal act then I’ve found the Creator. We are told that “All things were made by him and without him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:3). If all things are made by him, and I trace him all the way back to my own wonderful human Imagination then I stop right there. That’s where he is!
So, if in the day I imagine all kinds of unlovely things, well, he creates all things, and so then they happen. But the world will say, “How could Jesus Christ the God of love create the unlovely?” then you have another creator. And God is one: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord thy God the Lord is one” (Deut. 6:4). You can’t have two Gods, you can’t have two creators. “I kill, I make alive; I wound, I heal”…read it in Deuteronomy (32:39). I kill, yet I, the one who kills, I make alive. I wound, but I heal. So if I misuse my creative power and imagine all the unlovely things of the world, they come to pass too. But the same creative being is bringing them into being to teach me a lesson. For he has given himself to me, so if I do not imagine the lovely things of the world, how can they come into my world? If I want the lovely things to come, start imagining the best and loveliest in the world, and they’ll all come right into my world.
So take your friends tonight. Do like Job and start praying for your friends, for your friends are yourself made visible. A friend needs something lovely, something wonderful, well, just take it. Today, without knowing actual details, I just simply imagined lovely things for two very close and dear to me. In fact, I did it yesterday while dwelling on these thoughts, and I took my daughter and I took my friend David. I didn’t go into details. I want them both to be thrilled and to be happy with whatever they are seeking in this world and that they have found it. No matter what it is, they have found it and it’s perfect, beyond their wildest dreams and it’s lovely. Well, my daughter came home today after an interview—without giving me any details—she was walking on air. I don’t care what is the outcome. She was walking on air with whatever it is that was the result of the interview. Driving here tonight David began to tell me things that are lovely in his present world. Now the outcome must be perfect…it must be.
I took it lightly and I firmly believe in Jesus Christ. I have such a conviction in Jesus Christ. But I don’t go there to pray for it, pray to him; there is no Jesus Christ outside of my human Imagination, but none. I could not get down on my knees and pray to any being in this world. I can’t take the hand of anyone who thinks he’s important and kiss it and think that he has done me a favor, I can’t! I can only turn within to my own wonderful human Imagination, and I’m so convinced that whatever I imagine and accept and can say to it in response, “Amen, it’s done!”
Now, do you know the two words in Hebrew that are used for faith? One is “amen,” that’s the most common, and the other is “emeth.” Emeth is often translated “truth.” Amen sometimes is translated “believing, believe.” Now Jesus is given the name, the title of Amen. In the 3rd chapter of Revelation, “And these are the words of the Amen” and it’s capitalized (verse 14). It’s the Amen, the faithful and true witness. Here he is the faithful and true witness and he’s called the Amen, the creative power of God. Read it in the 3rd chapter of Revelation. Now, we’re told in the 1st chapter of Corinthians, “In him, all the promises of God find their Yes” (2Cor. 1:20). All promises find yes, fulfillment, affirmation in him. That is why we declared the Amen through him. So God in me performs it. I can’t make a flower, not the physical man called Neville; I can imagine one, that’s Christ. I couldn’t possibly do any of the things I imagine if I couldn’t imagine them, so the work belongs to God. Mine is a grateful response…I must say Amen.
So I imagine a thing. I think it is lovely. I want David to have it, I want my Vicki to have it, I want so-and-so to have it; and having done it, all I say is Amen and firmly believe that that which I have imagined must come to pass. How it’s going to come to pass I do not know, haven’t the slightest idea. I could not consciously build the bridge of incidents, that series of events necessary to lead my Vicky or to lead my friend David from where they are to the fulfillment of that state. But I went from where they are to the end, and thought in terms only of these two states. And just as this lovely rose came so simply, these must come to them. Tonight, when they both are walking on air as it were it was only the beginning. It was like a foreshadowing of what must crystallize in their world…it must!
So trust him. Make no excuse for Christ, none whatsoever. People will say, “Now don’t talk about it.” Why shouldn’t I talk about it? If I believe in him, why shouldn’t I? As we are told in Jeremiah, “If I say I will not mention him, never use his name again, then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire all shut up in my bones, and I’m weary with holding it in, and I cannot” (20:9). If you don’t have the courage of your convictions, well then, don’t talk about him…but who is going to believe you after it happens? And so, I won’t talk about it, you’ll say, and then all of a sudden it happens, and you’ll say “You know, on so-and-so I did so-and-so and this is what happened.” “Is that so, why didn’t you write it down first?” So in scripture he said, “I will tell you before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe” (John 13:19). So he tells him exactly what’s going to take place. You’re going to be born from above, for “unless you are born from above you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven” (John 3:3), so I tell you before it takes place. I tell you that you’re going to be split from top to bottom, and you will see your body completely severed in two; and then you’re going to actually, I would say, fuse with what you see, a golden liquid light, and up you will go up your spinal cord into your skull, into heaven. The child that comes into your world will signify your birth from above and it will be just as described in the gospel. So I tell you these things before they take place so that after they take place you’ll believe.
So in my audience here, many have had the experience; and everyone who has had the experience has ceased to be my child. I can no longer…for until Christ is formed in them I will labor and labor until. As he is formed and born, well then, you are no longer…I’m no longer your father; for the Father then unfolds his wings within you and you are the Father, God the Father.
So I ask you tonight to test it…to test it every moment of time. Live with absolute faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is a person because you are. That’s the one. You imagine a state: That’s the creative power of the world. Now believe in the reality of that which you have imagined, and say to it, Amen…for, it is true, both Amen and Emeth. Your word is truth: “Thy word is truth”—and the sum of your words is truth, that’s what we’re told. And his name shall be called now the Word of God, the creative power of God.
Tonight, and I mean now as we go into the Silence, try it. Take a glorious future for yourself and make the future present, bring it right into the present. Have some friend congratulate you on your good fortune now, not tomorrow but now, as though it had taken place and they are aware of it and they are simply congratulating you on your good fortune, either for yourself or for another. And do it now. Let us go.

Any questions?
Q: (inaudible)
A: Everything in this world that is now visible and true through the centuries was first only imagined. Yes, my dear, we’re here to achieve a higher power, symbolized in the babe’s teeth…that’s power. When I call upon Jehovah to break the teeth of the wicked, I’m asking him to take away the power of the wicked. That’s what I’m asking in symbolism. When I say the righteous shall break the jawbone and the fangs of the unrighteous, I’m saying that they should be rubbed out, the power should be rubbed out. It’s only creative power. And all the children in my family are born with power, double power…it’s raised, raised to a higher level…for it’s only a creative power. For God limits himself to that which is called man for the purpose of expanding beyond what formerly he exercised. You couldn’t do it unless you first contracted; so the limit of contraction is man, and then he starts to expand. So we’re here for the purpose of creating and you start right here. This is the world of educated darkness. And try it! If you don’t prove that Christ really exist in you as your own wonderful human Imagination then you haven’t found him. You can go to church every day of the week and give all the things of the world to the church, but you haven’t found him. You must find him in yourself as a creative power. He is the creative power and wisdom of God as described in the 1st chapter of Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians: “Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God” (verse 24).
Q: (inaudible)
A: Ephraim is affirmation…Ephraim and Manasseh. Manasseh means “the absence of consciousness or the loss of consciousness”…he forgets. Ephraim is “to affirm.” Affirmation is far greater than negation. Ephraim, who came second, was given the blessing of the grandfather. So when he came forward, the grandfather switched his hands and put the right hand on the second one’s head, which is the blessing, and the left hand on the first one’s head. Joseph called his father Jacob’s attention to the fact that he had put his right hand on the second rather than on the first. Jacob corrected him and said, “He is the greater. Though he is second, he is the greater” (Gen. 48). It’s affirmation, complete conviction. They find, all the promises of God find their Yes, that’s affirmation, in him, not negation. It’s not the not doing the things in this world. People think if I don’t do this and I don’t do that and I don’t do the other then I’m acquiring merit towards the kingdom. Hasn’t a thing to do with the non-doing…what are you doing?
Any other questions, please?
But try this tonight. I think you all believe in God. As you’re told in the 14th of John, “You believe in God, believe in me also.” Well, the one speaking is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the power of God personified, personalized, and that power is your own wonderful human Imagination. Believe in the reality of your imaginal acts and learn to live in a state of love, loving everyone, and really empathizing instead of sympathizing. The whole vast world can sympathize and so few can empathize. They’re envious of the good fortune of another, but, oh, they’ll rush next door to any misfortune of a neighbor. Rush over and cry and weep and carry on and do all kinds of things…bring over dinner because you can’t cook it, you just lost your husband. But now let the same one hear that the husband instead of being dead was promoted, and really promoted to something big and fabulous in the world, they don’t go next door to empathize. But they will rush next door to sympathize. So in our language we have many words that are synonyms for sympathy and so few for empathy. If we really practiced it, man would simply manufacture words that would be synonymous with empathy. But because he doesn’t put it into practice, you can’t find any synonyms in the Bible. Look up the words compassion, pity, sympathy, you find all these…condolence, oh Lord! We send all of these to those who have lost something, but who writes when they hear of good fortune. They all rush right to their typewriter or to their desk and write off letters of condolence. But all of a sudden you hear, “You know what has happened? Mr. Brown got the most marvelous promotion…he’s now the top”…well, who writes and congratulates? They sit back and envy. So if you practice this…because it’s yourself pushed out anyway…and when Job prayed for his friends, his own captivity was lifted. You never lose a thing in praying for another, never, because there is no other. It’s yourself anyway.
Q: (inaudible)
A: Well, that’s a whole evening…but I’ll give it to you in just…if by reincarnation is what the world means by it, that you die here and return without any consciousness of ever having lived before, and you come back as a girl or a boy in some other environment, and you go through all these things, one after the other, no. I do not believe in reincarnation as publicly and popularly taught. I am individualized and I tend forever towards greater and greater individualization. That’s the purpose of it all. You will drop dead some time and you’ll go on cue, and when you go you’ll find yourself miraculously restored to life; a body same as before but new, unbelievably new and unaccountably new. No need for any aid. Right now you wear glasses, you will not need glasses. If you have bridge work or any other thing, you will not need it. You will have all the teeth. If you have any defect, all that is gone. The body is new, and from my own experience they are all about twenty years old when they are restored. It’s done instantly. And they continue in a section of time best suited for the work still to be done in them.
It’s a closed circuit. You can drop now in the 20th Century and find yourself in the 10th Century or 3,000. It’s irrelevant where you’re placed. It will be quite natural to you, and you’ll find yourself in a world terrestrial just like this, in a body terrestrial just like that, only it’s new and it’s young. It’s not a little baby…no going through the womb of woman. We are born twice; we die once. So when a man calls the other one dead, to the one who is called dead he hasn’t had the experience of death. Only those who observe his departure have the experience of his death, but he, the departing one, isn’t aware that he died. He does not die. Nothing dies. This little flower…I’ll put it tonight, as I did today, in a crystal vase, and maybe it will last, it’s only a tight bud, it may last a few days. And when I pluck it out and throw it away it still will not die. The flower that blooms once blooms forever, never passes away, nothing dies. I don’t care what the world will tell you this is something that you can’t account for it. They drop and they look like Methuselah they’re so old, because they’re pained for months or years before they depart and they look so old, old, old. And then suddenly, right before your eyes they are young boys and girls, twenty years old and nothing missing, not a thing is missing. They find themselves in a section of time best suited.
So it doesn’t really matter if you go forward or backward because it’s a circle anyway. As Ecclesiastes teaches, “Is there a thing of which it is said, ‘See, this is new’? I tell you it has been already in ages past. But there is no remembrance of former things, nor shall there be any remembrance of things to come after among those who come later” (1:10,11). Man cannot believe that. And yet the man who won the Nobel Prize in Physics last year, Richard Feynman wrote a paper in 1949 for which last year they gave him the Noble Prize, and in that he said “the entire space-time history of the world is laid out and we only become aware of increasing portions of it successively.” For that he got the Prize. Well, I said that long before he wrote the paper, and it was said in the Bible thousands of years ago in Ecclesiastes. But they didn’t give me any Nobel Prize…because I am unschooled in the eyes of these people who pass all this judgment. And so, “What does he have to say to the world? How can he have learning if he didn’t go to school?” Well, this one went to school and he has all the degrees in the world and so he comes out with this lovely statement.
And, of course, if you read his paper, you would think that I wrote it in the sense that it’s so crazy. He is speaking of a little positron, a little particle that is produced in atomic disintegration. It’s charge is positive, as against the electron which is negative. It acts in a strange way: “It starts from where it hasn’t been and it speeds to where it was an instant ago; arriving there it moves back to where it hasn’t been.” That’s Feynman, not Neville, and for that he gets his prize. He said, “It used to be believed that the future is a gradual and slowly unfolding past, for the past is always moving into the future and gradually unfolding.” He said, “That’s false, that concept is false. Today, modern Physics must see a closed circuit, and the entire space-time history of the world already laid out, and we only become aware of increasing portions of it successively.” And as to the direction in which we go to become aware, that is irrelevant. Whether we move backwards a thousand years at the moment called death, or whether you move forward a thousand years, or continue the next year, it’s irrelevant.
Now, that is Richard Feynman, one of the great theoretical physicists of our world today…not just America, of the world. I think at the moment he’s at Cal Tech. When he wrote this paper he was at Cornell and that was 1949. Because, I gave a lecture in Milwaukee and the chemist Allis Chalmers questioned my right to say what I did. I said, I don’t care what you say. I can’t argue with you based upon what you know chemically, I tell you what I see. I have these experiences and I’m telling you what I see in my mystical experiences…that I can start from a point where I haven’t been and I’ll go back in time to where I was, and I’m bounced so hard when I get there that I’m shocked to find that what I was just doing isn’t true. Well, then I go forward now across a bridge of incidents leading up to where as a man of flesh and blood I have not as yet been, but I was there in consciousness. So I go forward in consciousness into a certain state and feel the reality of it, as I did this, and then I open my eyes and I’m shocked to find I’m not holding it in my hand. So I came back to where I was. And then I come forward across a series of events, and then to find that here I encounter it. So the same thing…and so I played the part of the positron.
So the chemistry of Physics cannot differ in any respect from the chemistry of the mind of man, same thing. You are told that in the 14th chapter of John: “In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go, I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am there ye may be also” (verses 2, 3). So I stand here and go forward in time to a certain point and feel the reality of what I want. Then I open my eyes and I’m shocked to find that I’m here, because I know where I was only an instant ago. Now this shock turns me around and I move forward now to where I had been. When I get there, all that I was doing there I encounter.
Good night.
